Pepsin is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down proteins into peptides. It is produced naturally in the stomachs of mammals from its inactive precursor, pepsinogen, which is activated in acidic environments.

In equine feed supplements, pepsin may be included to support protein digestion, particularly in animals with compromised digestive efficiency. It is typically derived from the stomach lining of pigs (porcine source) and processed into a dried or powdered form suitable for feed applications.
