Protease - Feed Ingredient
Protease refers to a broad class of enzymes that catalyze the breakdown of proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. These enzymes can be derived from animal, plant, or microbial sources and are commonly classified based on their site of action (e.g., endopeptidases and exopeptidases). In animal nutrition, including equine feed applications, proteases are typically included as feed additives to improve protein digestibility.
In equine diets, exogenous proteases may be added to enhance the enzymatic breakdown of dietary protein, particularly in feeds that contain heat-processed or complex protein sources. This can support more efficient nutrient absorption in the small intestine. While not universally included in all horse feeds, proteases may be used strategically in performance, senior, or specialty diets to support protein utilization.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Protease as an ingredient.
