Rye - Feed Ingredient
Rye (Secale cereale) is a cereal grain grown primarily in cooler climates and is used in both human and animal nutrition. It contains moderate levels of energy, protein, and fiber, and is a source of various micronutrients including phosphorus and B-vitamins.
In equine nutrition, rye may be included in the diet in the form of whole grain, cracked grain, or ryegrass forage. When used as a grain, it provides fermentable carbohydrates that can contribute to the horse’s energy needs. However, rye has a relatively high content of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), which may pose a risk for horses with metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance or laminitis.
Ryegrass, when used as forage, can be fed as pasture, hay, or silage, and offers a palatable, digestible fiber source for horses
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Rye as an ingredient.
