Smectite - Feed Ingredient
Smectite refers to a group of clay minerals known for their high swelling capacity and non-speficic binding. Montmorillonite is the most commonly used type of smectite in animal nutrition. These clays are formed from weathered volcanic ash and are characterized by their high porosity.
In equine feeds and supplements, smectite is used as a binding or anti-caking agent and as a mycotoxin adsorbent, particularly aflatoxins and other mold-related compounds.
Since they are non-specific binders, smectites may also bind to nutrients or medications in the gut, potentially reducing their absorption and effectiveness. For this reason, they are not intended for long-term continuous use.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Smectite as an ingredient.
