Sugar - Feed Ingredient
Sugar, in the context of equine feed ingredients, typically refers to sucrose—a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose. It is most commonly derived from sugarcane or sugar beet processing and may be included in feed formulations in various forms such as granulated sugar, molasses, or dried molasses products. Sucrose is a highly palatable, rapidly digestible carbohydrate source that is absorbed primarily in the small intestine.
In horse feeds, sugar is used to enhance palatability, promote feed intake, and provide a readily available source of energy. It is especially common in pelleted or textured feeds, where it also plays a role in reducing feed dustiness and improving texture. Additionally, sugar may act as a carrier or stabilizer for certain medications, flavors, or micronutrients in supplements.
Feeding concerns with sugar arise primarily in horses with metabolic conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), insulin dysregulation, Cushing’s disease (PPID), or obesity. In such cases, the inclusion of high levels of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), including sugar, should be minimized due to the risk of exacerbating hyperinsulinemia or laminitis.
