Transmission of the cytochrome c structural gene in horse-donkey crosses.
The Journal of biological chemistry    February 10, 1977   Volume 252, Issue 3 830-834
Walasek OF, Margoliash E.Donkey cytochrome c was shown to differ from horse cytochrome c by having a serine in position 47 rather than a threonine. The rest of the amino acid sequences are identical. Mules and hinnies, both males and females, carry equal amounts of horse and donkey cytochromes c. The same ratio is found in hinnies in preparations from heart tissue and from skeletal muscle. These results demonstrate that cytochrome c is transmitted in horse-donkey crosses as a simple Mendelian character which is neither sex-linked nor shows dominance. The cytochrome c gene is therefore located in the nuclear genome, as...
Guanidination of horse methemoglobin.
Archives of biochemistry and biophysics    February 1, 1977   Volume 179, Issue 1 322-327 doi: 10.1016/0003-9861(77)90117-5
Sakura JD, Rupley JA.Reaction of horse methemoglobin with O-methylisourea at pH 10.2 results in 95% conversion of lysine residues to homoarginine. Analysis of the chymotryptic peptides showed that no single ϵ-amino group was unreactive. Guanidination decreases the dependence of the sedimentation coefficient on hydrogen ion concentration in the range of pH 8 to 11 and did not affect the dependence on protein concentration at pH 7. These results support the conclusion that the lysine side chains involved in subunit contacts have sufficient freedom to accommodate the small changes in bulk and geometry associated wit...

Determination of total and ultrafilterable calcium and magnesium in normal equine serum.
American journal of veterinary research    February 1, 1977   Volume 38, Issue 2 259-262
Holley DC, Evans JW.Total and ultrafilterable calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) values were determined for Shetland pony stallions, stallions, and pregnant and diestrous mares, using a simple, inexpensive, quick procedure to obtain an ultrafiltrate of serum. There was no significant difference between horses and ponies, between stallions and mares, or between pregnant and nonpregnant mares. The percentage of total serum Ca that was ultrafilterable was 63.4+/-1.7 for horses and 64.8+/-2.2 for ponies. The percentage of total serum Mg that was ultrafilterable was 75.6+/-1.5 for horses and 77.0+/-1.7 for ponies. Total ...

Amino acid composition of casein isolated from the milks of different species.
Canadian journal of zoology    January 1, 1977   Volume 55, Issue 1 231-236 doi: 10.1139/z77-026
Lauer BH, Baker BE.Casein was isolated from the milks of the following species: cow, horse, pig, reindeer, caribou, moose, harp seal, musk-ox, polar bear, dall sheep, and fin whale. The caseins were subjected to acid hydrolysis, the resultant amino acids were converted to their n-butyl-N-trifluoroacetyl esters, and the amino acid composition of the caseins was determined by gas chromatographic analysis of these esters. Notable among the results was the close similarity, with respect to amino acid composition, of reindeer and caribou caseins. The results of the amino acid analyses of the other caseins are present...
Reaction of bovine and equine growth hormones with tetranitromethane.
International journal of peptide and protein research    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 2 119-128 doi: 10.1111/j.1399-3011.1977.tb03471.x
Daurat-Larroque ST, Portuguez ME, Santomé JA.Bovine and equine growth hormones were chemically modified with tetranitromethane, at pH 7.4 during 5 h and at pH 8.0 in the presence of 8 M urea during 1 h. a) Both hormones have very similar but not identical reactivities. b) The nitration of the reactive tyrosines and tryptophan residues at pH 7.4 produces no detectable changes in their immunological or somatotrophic activities. C) The nitration of all tyrosine residues in both hormones gives rise to a complete loss of somatographic activity with no alteration of the immunological activity.
Purification and characterization of equine herpesvirus-induced DNA.
Virology    January 1, 1977   Volume 76, Issue 1 395-408 doi: 10.1016/0042-6822(77)90311-7
Allen GP, O'Callaghan DJ, Randall CC.Infection of cells with equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) or type 3 (EHV-3) resulted in the induction of a DNA polymerase activity distinguishable from host cell DNA polymerases by its high salt requirement for maximal activity. By column chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, DNA-cellulose, phosphocellulose, and hydroxyapatite, the EHV-1-induced polymerase was purified 500-fold with 1–2% recovery of total activity from the nuclei of infected hamster livers. The final enzyme preparation was homogeneous as judged by electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. Calculations based ...

Labeling of antilactose antibody.
Methods in enzymology    January 1, 1977   Volume 46 516-523 doi: 10.1016/s0076-6879(77)46062-2
Gopalakrishnan PV, Zimmerman UJ, Karush F.Affinity labeling studies with anticarbohydrate antibodies have been very limited. In earlier studies, diazoniumphenyl glycosides were employed as affinity labeling reagents for rabbit and equine anti-p-azophenyl-β-lactoside and p-azophenyl- β-galactoside antibodies. Although these antibodies were heterogeneous, it was possible to identify the labeled residues in the heavy or light chains since the modified residues had characteristic absorption spectra. With the discovery of bacterial cell walls of Streptococcus groups A and C induced antipolysaccharide antibodies of restricted heterogeneit...
[Studies on the effects of intravenous administration of glucose, fructose, invertose and sorbitol on various blood constituents of blood plasma (monosaccharides, insulin, lactate, pyruvate and free fatty acids as well as glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase) in the horse].
Archiv fur experimentelle Veterinarmedizin    January 1, 1977   Volume 31, Issue 5 701-718
Kouider S, Kolb FE, Müller I, Pfüller C, Schneider J.Horses were examined for the behaviour of various blood constituents prior to and following infusions of solutions of glucose, fructose, invertose, and sorbitol. Infusion of 0.5 g/kg live weight glucose to six horses was followed by half-life variation between eleven and 23 minutes. Subsequent infusion of invertose to the same animals usually caused prolongation of glucose half-life. Half-life values were between 17 and 33 minutes for fructose and between 21 and 80 minutes for glucose. Infusion of 0.5 g/kg live weight fructose to two horses was followed by half-life values between 17 and 18 mi...
Human lymphocyte subpopulations: rosette formation with sheep, human and horse red blood cells.
Immunological communications    January 1, 1977   Volume 6, Issue 5 455-471 doi: 10.3109/08820137709094145
Yu DT, Gale RP, Kacena A, Pearson CM.Rosette formation between human lymphocytes and horse red blood cells could be promoted by a low pH medium, overnight incubation and a temperature of 4 degrees C. The percent of sheep, horse and human rosette-forming cells in the peripheral blood were 71.7 +/- 1.8, 30.5 +/- 2.8 and 28.3 +/- 3.4 respectively. However, their percentages in thymuses were 97.1 +/- 1.1, 91.4 +/- 2.4 and 89.0 +/- 3.4. Using preparations of isolated subpopulations, it was observed that the horse and human red cell rosette-forming cells were probably also "early" sheep red cell rosette-forming cells. Rosette formation...
[Comparative electrophoretic study of the molecular forms of alkaline phosphatase in the leukocytes of agricultural animals].
Veterinarno-meditsinski nauki    January 1, 1977   Volume 14, Issue 3 100-104
Goranov Kh.The alkaline phosphatase enzyme, isolated by Morton's method from leukocytes of sheep, goats, and pigs gave after agarose elctrophoresis two isoenzyme fractions moving to the positive pole at the sites of the alpha 1- and alpha 2-globulins of the blood serum. In bovine leukocytes, besides these two fractions there was a third one that moved more slowly in the zone of the beta-globulins. In horses the alkaline phosphatase of leukocytes produced a wide band within the zones of the beta-globulins and the albumins. It was established that the proportion between the individual isoenzyme fractions o...
Stability of cephalosporins in horse serum.
Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy    January 1, 1977   Volume 11, Issue 1 174-175 doi: 10.1128/AAC.11.1.174
Foglesong MA.The antibiotic activity of cephalothin, cephaloridine, cephalexin, cephaloglycin, cefazolin, and cefamandole was determined after storage for up to 30 days in horse serum at -10 and 4 degrees C. Cephalothin, cefamandole, cefazolin, and cephalexin were stable for at least 30 days at -10 degrees C, whereas cephaloridine lost 29% of its initial activity and cephaloglycin lost more than 50%. Cefamandole, cefazolin, and cephalexin could only be stored for 3 days at 4 degrees C without significant loss in activity, whereas cephalothin, cephaloridine, and cephaloglycin could be stored for only 1 day....
The activity of some nucleolytic enzymes in semen and in the secretion of the male reproductive tract.
Andrologia    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 15-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0272.1977.tb01252.x
Mennella MR, Jones MR.The activity of 5'-nucleotidase (EC 1.3.5), cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (EC 2.1.4.17), non-specific phosphodiesterase (EC 3.1.4.1) and ribonuclease (EC 1.7.7.16)has been investigated in the seminal plasma of whole semen and in the secretions of the seminal vesicle, prostate and epididymis of the bull, boar, ram, stallion, jackass, rabbit and man. Bull seminal plasma showed the highest activity for 5'-nucleotidase, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and ribonuclease; in contrast, stallion and jackass semen were very poor in these enzymes. Ram, rabbit and boar seminal plasma showed inte...
Rapid heterolysis of indophenyl acetate by a constituent of a preparation of horse serum cholinesterase.
Enzyme    January 1, 1977   Volume 22, Issue 2 130-136 doi: 10.1159/000458777
Hubbard CD, Shoupe TS.A transient phase for the hydrolysis of indophenyl acetate by the commercial preparation of horse serum cholinesterase was observed on a stopped-flow spectrophotometer. It was found that the transient process is a reaction of the ester with a major component of the preparation and is not caused by the serum cholinesterase enzyme. This noncholinesterase component was isolated and the dependence of its concentration and that of the ester upon the transient liberation of the indophenolate ion were determined. Studies with the isolated component and subsequent analyses have led to the tentative id...

Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1977   Volume 58, Issue 2 163-165 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(77)90103-1
Masuda H, Shichijo S, Takeuchi M.1. Glycopeptides in the stomachs of eleven mammalian species, including human, rabbit, horse, cow, pig, goat, sheep, dog, cat, guinea pig and rat were assayed by determining the carbohydrate content of materials which remained after proteolysis. 2. The glycopeptide content was higher in the mucosa than in the muscular layer including serosa, especially in the porcine stomach and the fourth stomachs of the ruminants than in the stomachs of any other animals. 3. The glycopeptide, which was stained with both alcian blue and PAS, was absent or sparingly present in the mucosae of the human, rabbit,...
Identification of the PR prealbumin proteins in horse serum.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1977   Volume 18, Issue 4 458-470 doi: 10.1186/BF03548409
Ek N.The Pr protein, which is one of the major equine acidic prealbumins and which consists of a large number of phenotypes, has been studied with regard to its chemical identity. Serum samples of known Pr phenotype which had been treated with varying amounts of bovine trypsin were subjected to starch gel electrophoresis at pH 4.8. When a certain amount of trypsin was used, the Pr protein was markedly affected, whereas the other acidic prealbumins retained their normal electrophoreitic pattern. Extracts from three different regions of the acidic prealbumin field were tested by the casein precipitat...
Proton-dependent dissociation equilibrium of hemoglobin. 1. A 700-nanometer light-scattering study on horse methemoglobin in the pH range 4.8 to 7.2.
Biochemistry    December 28, 1976   Volume 15, Issue 26 5693-5697 doi: 10.1021/bi00671a002
Schroeder E, Wollmer A, Kubicki J, Ohlenbusch HD.The effect of proton concentration upon the subunit dissociation of horse methemoglobin has been investigated at two ionic strengths by light scattering photometry at 700 nm. Differential refractometry revealed a slight but systematic decrease of the specific refractive index increment with decreasing protein concentration for solutions in dialytic equilibrium with the solvent. In the pH range 4.8-7.2 the dissociation can be described by a simple equilibrium between tetramers and dimers. The dissociation constant Kd of the met derivative is found to be very similar to those of the O2- and CO-l...
Isolation, identification and quantitation of serum 5alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione and its relationship to progesterone in the pregnant mare.
Steroids    December 11, 1976   Volume 28, Issue 6 867-880 doi: 10.1016/0039-128x(76)90036-2
Atkins DT, Harms PG, Sorensen AM, Fleeger JL.5alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione was isolated from pooled pregnant mare serum using Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and identified by the use of radioimmunoassay, gas-liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. 5beta-pregnane-3,20-dione was not cross-reactive with the radioimmunoassay system and was not detected by gas-liquid chromatography. Peripheral blood levels of progesterone and 5alphs-pregnane-3,20-dione were determined by radioimmunoassay in four Quarter Horse mares for the first 150 days of gestation. Progesterone and 5alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione decli...
Pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin: ratio of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone activities measured by radioreceptor assay.
The Journal of endocrinology    December 1, 1976   Volume 71, Issue 3 471-482 doi: 10.1677/joe.0.0710371
Stewart F, Allen WR, Moor RM.Specific radioreceptor assays for FSH and LH, which employ tissue receptors from rat testis and highly purified human FSH (LER 1575-C) and LH (Hartree IRC-2, 24/6/69) as standards, have been developed to determine the FSH-like and LH-like activities in pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Measurements of FSH and LH concentrations in the serum of six pregnant Pony mares showed that the ratio of these two activities did not vary significantly between mares and remained constant between days 40 and 80 of gestation with a value of 1-45 +/- 0-04 (S.E.M.). The FSH:LH ratio of PMSG produced by cu...
Copper and the oxidation of hemoglobin: a comparison of horse and human hemoglobins.
Biochemistry    November 30, 1976   Volume 15, Issue 24 5337-5343 doi: 10.1021/bi00669a021
Rifkind JM, Lauer LD, Chiang SC, Li NC.Oxidation studies of hemoglobin by Cu(II) indicate that for horse hemoglobin, up to a Cu(II)/heme molar ratio of 0.5, all of the Cu(II) added is used to rapidly oxidize the heme. On the other hand, most of the Cu(II) added to human hemoglobin at low Cu(II)/heme molar ratios is unable to oxidize the heme. Only at Cu(II)/heme molar ratios greater than 0.5 does the amount of oxidation per added Cu(II) approach that of horse hemoglobin. At the same time, binding studies indicate that human hemoglobin has an additional binding site involving one copper for every two hemes, which has a higher copper...
