The nature of the prealbumin ‘esterases’ of horse serum.
Animal blood groups and biochemical genetics    January 1, 1979   Volume 10, Issue 3 181-184 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1979.tb01024.x
Matthews AG.Evidence is presented to suggest that the acidic prealbumin esterases in horse serum represent a protease-inhibitory protein. The esterase activity may arise from residual enzymic activity of the bound protease.
An investigation of the uterine luminal environment of non-pregnant and pregnant pony mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 403-411
Zavy JT, Mayer R, Vernon MW, Bazer FW, Sharp DC.Uterine flushings were collected from 30 non-pregnant Pony mares on Days 8, 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 after oculation. Mares were allowed a recovery period of one oestrous cycle and were mated at the next oestrus. They were then ovario-hysterectomized on days which corresponded to the day of the oestrous cycle to which they were assigned. Uterine flushings were analysed for total recoverable protein and acid phosphatase activity. Least squares analysis indicated a status X day interaction for total protein (P less than 0.10) and acid phosphatase activity (P less than 0.005) in which the latter was ...

Episodic LH secretion patterns in the mare during the oestrous cycle.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 143-150
Evans JW, Hughes JP, Neely DP, Stabenfeldt GH, Winger CM.Jugular blood samples were obtained from 8 mares at 5- and/or 20-min intervals for 2 to 5 days during various phases of the oestrous cycle for plasma LH determination. An episodic release pattern was observed in 1 of 3 mares sampled during the ovulatory period. One mare had one secretory burst and the other mare had several periods of fluctuating plasma LH concentration. During dioestrus, episodic secretions were observed in 2 mares sampled 11 to 13 days before and, in 1 mare, 9 days after ovulation. During the 2 to 5-day period before ovulation, episodic secretion was not observed (3 mares) b...
Ovulation and the movement of the conceptus in the first 35 days of pregnancy in thoroughbred mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 447-452
Butterfield RM, Matthews RG.Data from 937 Thoroughbred mares, when analysed as a single population, showed no significant difference between the activity of the right and left ovaries and the frequency of location of 35-day pregnancies in the right and left uterine horns. Nor were any differences shown when the data were analysed in years or sire groups. However, significantly more ovulations occurred in the right ovary in September and December and in the left ovary in October and November. Whereas the left and right ovulations were equal in lactating and dry mares, there was a highly significant increase in the number ...
Oestrogens and androgens in blastocoelic fluid and cultures of cells from equine conceptuses of 10-22 days gestation.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 413-420
Flood PF, Betteridge KJ, Irvine DS.Six samples of blastocoele fluid recovered between 10 and 22 days gestation were tested in human clinical radioimmunoassay systems measuring total oestrogens and total androgens. The results were erratic but in 5 cases measurements for oestrogen equivalent to between 1000 and 70,000 pg/ml and for androgen between 1000 and 85,000 pg/ml were recorded. Cells from two blastocysts were cultured in medium 199 with and without horse serum. When the used media were assayed, values equivalent to at least 8000 pg oestrogen/ml were obtained on 7 of 11 occasions. In 9 of 11 samples the androgen concentrat...
Stability of the lyophilized F(ab’)2 fragments of horse tetanus antibodies isolated by affinity chromatography.
Archivum immunologiae et therapiae experimentalis    January 1, 1979   Volume 27, Issue 4 499-509
Goch H, Schiller B, Korbecki M.F(ab')2 fragments of horse tetanus antibodies were obtained from horse hyperimmune sera after peptic digestion. The digest was passed through a column of tetanus toxoid coupled with Sepharose 4B, F(ab')2 fragments were eluted with a solution of 5 mM HCl in 150 mM NaCl and the eluates were concentrated by ultrafiltration and lyophilized. Glycine and human serum albumin were used as stabilizing agents. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic mobility and molecular weight of the fragments remained unchanged after lyophilization. Freeze-dried preparations stored two months at 56 degrees C showed only a...
A precursor role for DHA in a feto-placental unit for oestrogen formation in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 493-497
Raeside JI, Liptrap RM, McDonell WN, Milne FJ.Plasma levels of total oestrogens and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) were measured by radioimmunossay in samples taken from various blood vessels in both maternal and fetal compartments in 11 Pony mates. High concentrations of oestrogens (greater than 100 ng/ml of plasma), expressed as oestrone equivalents, were found in the fetal circulation. On both the fetal and maternal sides, oestrogen concentrations were lower in blood going to than from the placenta. DHA concentrations, on the other hand, were higher in blood flowing to the placenta from the fetus. The fetal gonads were seen as the source...
Isolation of Klebsiella pneumoniae from the urogenital tract of experimentally infected mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 317-320
Stratton LG, Corstvet R, Brown J, Corley L.K. pneumoniae capsule type 68 infused into the uterus of 4 mares was recovered up to 15 weeks after inoculation. The insertion of a tampon for 10 min was more effective than a swab technique in detecting the organism in the uterus. The clitoral fossa and the urethral orifice when sampled by the swab technique were also found to be infected for a comparable period. K. pneumoniae was isolated from the clitoral specimens more often and more consistently than from either urethral or uterine specimens.
[Structure and topography of the nucleus intermediomedialis in the equine spinal cord].
Polskie archiwum weterynaryjne    January 1, 1979   Volume 22, Issue 1 125-135
Boratyński Z, Flieger S, Eustachiewicz R, Sławomirski J.In this paper, structure and position of the centers of the parasympathetic nervous system in the horse spinal cord were presented. Studies were carried out on 2 horse spinal cordis. After sampling, the material was dehydrated in alcohol, embedded in paraffin and cut into 15 micron thick sections. The sections were stained according to Nissl's method. Every third section was studied. Nucleus intermediomedialis in the horse spinal cord is an intermittent tract of nervous cells passing from the I cervical neuromere to the V sacral segment. The cells of this nucleus form round, horizontally--oval...
Effect of successive ejaculation on stallion seminal characteristics.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 7-12
Squires EL, Pickett BW, Amann RP.Five ejaculates were collected at hourly intervals from 32 sexually rested stallions. Gel volume, total seminal volume, sperm concentration and spermatozoa per ejaculate declined (P less than 0.01) from the first to the second or third ejaculate. Gel-free seminal volume or percentage of motile spermatozoa did not vary (P less than 0.05) among ejaculates. Ejaculates from 2- to 3-year-old stallions contained less volume and fewer spermatozoa than those from 9- to 16-year-old stallions. Regardless of the stallion's age the first, first 2, first 3 and first 4 ejaculates represented 50, 74, 86 and ...
Behavior of ovarian and testicular interstitial cells during ontogenesis in the horse. Morphological and histochemical studies “in vivo” and “in vitro”.
Basic and applied histochemistry    January 1, 1979   Volume 23, Issue 2 85-91
Aureli G, Lauria A.The results of a study on interstitial cells of the horse gonads from foetal life to puberty are reported. The morphological (also ultrastructural) histochemical, histophysical and histoenzymological findings both in the organ and in monolayer cultures, clarify the problem of the ontogenesis of these cells showing that: --foetal interstitial cells give origin to "xanthochrome" cells; --"xanthochrome" cells in the prepuberal gonad are continuously renewed; --the same type of cells which in th prepuberal period undergo lipochromic degeneration, differentiate at puberty into Leydig cells in the t...

Epidemiology of equine upper respiratory tract disease on standardbred racetracks. Sherman J, Mitchell WR, Martin SW, Thorsen J, Ingram DG.The outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections in horses at Standardbred racetracks were investigated over a three year period. The most serious epidemics of respiratory disease occurred in the winter and spring seasons. Both influenza viruses and equine herpesvirus 1 were shown to be present in the horse population. The herpesvirus was associated with respiratory disease particularly in the winter but the equine influenza viruses apparently were responsible for the major epidemics of respiratory disease at these tracks. Younger horses, two or three years of age, were particularly suscept...
The critical period for the maternal recognition of pregnancy in pony mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 395-401
Hershman L, Douglas RH.Two experiments were performed to deterine the critical time at which the equine blastocyst must be present within the uterus of the mare to prevent regression of the corpus luteum, and thus establish the critical time for the maternal recognition of pregnancy. A non-surgical blastocyst collection technique was developed to study this relationship between the blastocyst and the maternal ovary. Results from these experiments demonstrated that the cyclic life-span of the corpus luteum is not affected by the presence of the blastocyst within the mare's uterus until after Day 14 after ovulation. L...
Radiographic evidence of impaired pulmonary function in laterally recumbent anaesthetised horses.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 1 24-32 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1979.tb01290.x
McDonell WN, Hall LW, Jeffcott LB.Studies in conscious and anaesthetised ponies demonstrated that starvation, anaesthesia and changes in body position influence the radiographic appearance of the lungs in the lateral and dorsoventral views. Radiographic appearances could not be closely correlated with blood gas values, but they suggested that the volume of the lowermost lung of the laterally recumbent animal is greatly reduced.
Effect of diethylstilboestrol on the relationship between LH, PMSG and progesterone during pregnancy in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 465-470
Nett TM, Pickett BW.Two studies were conducted to determine the relationship between LH and progesterone and between PMSG and progesterone during pregnancy in mares. In the first, samples of jugular blood were collected daily from 7 mares from the first day of oestrus until Day 28 of pregnancy, and in the second, samples were collected weekly from 14 mares from Day 35 of gestation until parturition. In an attempt to prolong secretion of progesterone from accessory corpora lutea, 7 of these 14 mares were injected with increasing doses (2--10 mg) of diethylstilboestrol (DES) between Days 84 and 142 of gestation. Th...
Preparation and some properties of a dimeric form (S-S) of horse muscle acylphosphatase.
International journal of peptide and protein research    January 1, 1979   Volume 14, Issue 3 227-233 doi: 10.1111/j.1399-3011.1979.tb01929.x
Stefani M, Berti A, Camici G, Manao G, Cappugi G, Ramponi G.The use of sodium selenite as a catalyst in the presence of oxygen was a suitable technique to obtain in good yield an interchain S-S dimeric form of horse muscle acylphosphatase. The dimer so obtained possesses kinetic properties very similar to those of the native enzyme. On the other hand the dimer has shown a generally lower stability in respect of the thermal inactivation, particularly in the acidic environment, to the lyophilization and to the proteolytic attack. As regards the 8 M urea inactivation, the dimer is not able to completely regain its activity by dilution, showing a behaviour...

Fractures of the proximal sesamoid bones in thoroughbred foals.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 1 48-52 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1979.tb01297.x
Ellis DR.Eighteen cases of fractures of the proximal sesamoid bones in Thoroughbred foals are described. Most of the fractures were in foals under 2 months old and all but one occurred in the forelegs. The bones commonly fractured when the foal galloped to exhaustion trying to keep up with its dam in the paddock. The types of fracture varied but a simple fracture of the medial sesamoid was most frequent and the majority were towards the base of the bone. Six foals sustained a fracture of more than one sesamoid bone and one foal fractured all 4 proximal sesamoid bones in its front legs. Treatment includ...
Observations on the length and angle of declination of the vulva and its relation to fertility in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 299-305
Pascoe RR.An instrument has been designed to measure the effective length (l) and angle of declination (a) of the vulva in the mare. The product, la, provides an index (Caslick Index) suitable for determining the necessity for Caslick's operation in mares not exhibiting the classical symptoms associated with pneumovagina. The value l showed a significant increase (P less than 0.05) with increased age in breeding mares. Studies on 9020 mares revealed that all caslicked mares, and mares with a Caslick Index of less than 150, had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than non-caslicked mares of similar age...
The density of equine tissue at 37 degrees C.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1979   Volume 26, Issue 1 71-75
Webb AI, Weaver BM.The density of the following equine tissues was measured: white and grey brain matter, myocardium, lung parenchyma, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract and contents, renal medulla and cortex, muscle, fat, tendon and bone. Statistical analysis indicated that there were highly significant differences in the values for density between horses and between tissues within horses. Values for density of eight different muscles were obtained for 18 horses and these were shown to differ highly significantly between horses and between muscles within horses. The values for splenic density differed highly...
An outbreak of contagious equine metritis in 1977 and its effect the following season.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 351-354
Day FT, Crowhurst RC, Simpson DJ, Greenwood RE, Ellis DR, Eaton-Evans W.An outbreak of contagious equine metritis occurred in Newmarket in 1977. This survey records the effect on fertility of 20 of the stallions which were infected. Swabbing of mares since then has detected 37 carrier mares harbouring the organism, most frequently in the clitoral area. This swabbing programme reduced the incidence of new cases in 1978 to 3 mares and 1 stallion.
Epidemiological observations on contagious equine metritis in Kentucky, 1978.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 343-349
Bryans JT, Hendricks JB.Contagious equine metritis, introduced by importation of 2 comtaminated stallions from France, affected 54 Thoroughbred brood mares during the 1978 breeding season in Kentucky. The infection was diagnosed bacteriologically and by the use of a complement fixation test. Although lateral spread to stallions, and probably to a few mares, occurred through human agency in the breeding sheds of 2 stud farms, control measures instituted early in the epidemic confined the disease to brood mares bred by stallion on only these farms.
Influence of ovaries and photoperiod on reproductive function in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 79-86
Freedman LJ, Garcia MC, Ginther OJ.A 16 h daily photoperiod hastened the onset of the ovulatory season (first ovulation); gonadotrophin and follicular changes prior to the onset were similar in intact light-treated and control mares. A preovulatory decline in FSH concentrations before the onset of the ovulatory season preceded the decrease in number of follicles (15--25 mm) and the rise in LH concentrations which was temporally associated with the growth of an ovulatory follicle. Seasonal changes of FSH and LH concentrations were found in ovariectomized mares and were influenced by photoperiod. During the anovulatory season, th...

Internal fixation of fractures of the third phalanx in three horses.
Australian veterinary journal    January 1, 1979   Volume 55, Issue 1 29-32 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1979.tb09543.x
Rose RJ, Taylor BJ, Bellenger CR.The technique of internal fixation of intra-articular fractures of the third phalanx using lag screw interfragmentary compression is described. Three cases are discussed and the successful treatment of infection and osteomyelitis described in one of them. Despite this potential complication internal fixation offers a better prognosis and also a more rapid return to work than non-operative treatments.
The bacteriological culture of equine uterine contents, in-vitro sensitivity of organisms isolated and interpretation.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 307-315
Shin SJ, Lein DH, Aronson AL, Nusbaum SR.A total of 19 pathogenic bacterial species was isolated from uterine swabs of 498 out of 1539 mares over 4 years. The swabs were taken by 5 veterinary clinicians using 2 different techniques. Bacterial contamination during swabbing was minimized by scrupulous attention to cleansing of the external genitalia and the perineal area, and in the handling of the culture specimen. The most prevalent organisms isolated were beta-haemolytic streptococcus (39%), Escherichia coli (27%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (7%). Interpretation of microbiological findings correlated well with clinical findings when n...
