Isolates of fungi from symptomatic carthorses in Awassa, Ethiopia. Samples were collected from clinically infected carthorses in Awassa. Fungus species affecting the carthorses were identified. Eight genera of fungal groups were isolated from swabs and skin scrapes taken from symptomatic horses. Age determination in mini-Shetland ponies and donkeys. The accuracy of ageing mini-Shetland ponies and donkeys was assessed by correlating the appearance of specific dental features with the known ages of 106 mini-Shetland ponies and 63 donkeys. The ages of the animals ranged between 2 days and 26 years. In both species the eruption of the deciduous and permanent incisors occurred later than in horses. Predilection sites of Trichinella spiralis larvae in naturally infected horses. A total of 120 muscle tissues from three horses naturally infected with Trichinella spiralis were examined. Characterization of a Sarcocystis neurona isolate (SN6) from a naturally infected horse from Oregon. An isolate of Sarcocystis neurona (SN6) was obtained from the spinal cord of a horse from Oregon with neurologic signs. Congenital atresia of the parotid duct in a horse. Congenital anomalies of the equine salivary glands and their ductal systems are rare. Evaluation of different projections for radiographic detection of tarsal degenerative joint disease in Icelandic horses. A retrospective look at horses exhibiting unusual clinical signs after exercising on L-NAME. Three of 5 horses exercising on L-NAME (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester) exhibited unusual clinical signs towards the end of exercise bouts and post-exercise. L-NAME is a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor which blocks synthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine. The induced absence of nitric oxide may have lead to the clinical signs observed.
Salmonella Abortusequi strains of equine origin harbor a 95kb plasmid responsible for virulence in mice. Most Salmonella choleraesuis subsp. choleraesuis serovar Abortusequi strains of equine origin harbor a 95kb plasmid, pSA95. Results of PCR and Southern blot analysis suggest that pSA95 contains spv genes. A pSA95-cured strain of S. Abortusequi was 48 times less virulent to mice than its parental strain. Virulence was restored by reintroduction of pSA95. These results provide clear evidence that pSA95 confers virulence on S. Abortusequi in mice. This is the first report describing a virulence plasmid of S. Abortusequi.

Horse vision and an explanation for the visual behaviour originally explained by the ‘ramp retina’. Here we provide confirmation that the 'ramp retina' of the horse, once thought to result in head rotating visual behaviour, does not exist. We found a 9% variation in axial length of the eye between the streak region and the dorsal periphery. However, the difference was in the opposite direction to that proposed for the 'ramp retina'. Furthermore, acuity in the narrow, intense visual streak in the inferior retina is 16.5 cycles per degree compared with 2.7 cycles per degree in the periphery. Factors involved in the prognosis of equine laminitis in the UK. The significance of clinical and radiological parameters as prognostic indicators for laminitis, 'founder' and 'sinking syndrome' was studied using case records of 216 horses and ponies.
