Topic:Limb Deformities

Limb deformities in horses refer to abnormalities in the shape or alignment of the limbs, which can occur due to genetic factors, developmental issues, or trauma. These deformities can affect the horse's gait, performance, and overall health. Common types of limb deformities include angular limb deformities, such as valgus and varus, and flexural deformities, like contracted tendons. Diagnosis and management of limb deformities often involve clinical examination, imaging techniques, and sometimes corrective interventions. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and implications of limb deformities in equine health.

Clinical, magnetic resonance, and sonographic imaging findings in horses with proximal plantar metatarsal pain. Labens R, Schramme MC, Robertson ID, Thrall DE, Redding WR.Sonography is commonly used for diagnosis of desmopathy of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament in horses. However, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been stated to be superior for detecting disease and localizing lesions. In this retrospective study of 39 horses or 46 hind limbs with lameness due to proximal plantar metatarsal pain, the clinical and diagnostic findings are discussed and sonography and MR imaging compared for examination of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament. With MR imaging interpreted as the clinical gold standard, desmopathy of the proximal part of the s...

Skeletal forelimb measurements and hoof spread in relation to asymmetry in the bilateral forelimb of horses.
Equine veterinary journal    May 28, 2009   Volume 41, Issue 3 238-241 doi: 10.2746/042516409x395561
Wilson GH, McDonald K, O'Connell MJ.Research has highlighted a high frequency of skeletal asymmetries in horses. In addition, research into hoof asymmetries has shown that within a bilateral pair, the hoof with the smaller angle is often subjected to greater loading. There has been limited attention paid to understanding compensatory mechanisms for skeletal asymmetries in the horse; the dynamic structure of the hoof could potentially be acting in a compensatory capacity. Objective: To investigate the relationship between morphometry of forelimb segments and hoof spread and their incidence of asymmetry. Methods: Ten bilateral mea...

Boots on horses: limb protection or hyperflexion training aids in the showjumping horse.
Journal of applied animal welfare science : JAAWS    June 24, 2008   Volume 11, Issue 3 223-227 doi: 10.1080/10888700802100975
Murphy J.Showjumping riders regularly employ various schooling strategies to control the horse's jump stride kinematics (JSK). Strategies include plyometric training regimes with fences of different heights and widths set at specific distances. Gymnastic grids teach the horse to jump cleanly. Rapping, once used almost routinely, is no longer in vogue. However, the use of performance enhancing (PE) boots on the distal hind limbs to alter equine JSK has become popular. There are two broad categories of PE boots: weighted and pressure. Some riders use so-called weighted boots on the horses' hind limbs dur...

Bilateral Polydactyly in a foal.
Journal of veterinary science    May 24, 2007   Volume 8, Issue 2 201-203 doi: 10.4142/jvs.2007.8.2.201
Carstanjen B, Abitbol M, Desbois C.The following case report describes the diagnosis and surgery of bilateral polydactyly of unknown origin in a colt. A 7-month-old Berber colt was referred for cosmetic and curative excision of supernumerary digits. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral polydactyly and welldeveloped first carpal bones. Surgery consisted of an osteotomy of both second metacarpal bones combined with an amputation of the supernumerary digits. The follow-up at 18 months after surgery revealed a sound horse with an excellent cosmetic outcome.
Imaging diagnosis–equine mast cell tumor. Cole R, Chesen AB, Pool R, Watkins J.Equine mast cell tumors are typically benign solitary growths of the head, neck, trunk, or limbs. When involving the limbs, these masses tend to be adjacent to joints without involving them. In radiographs there is often a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass with granular mineralization. The Arabian breed appears to be over represented. Surgical removal is usually curative. In this report, we describe the diagnosis, clinical features, and management of mast cell tumors in the rear limb of a horse.

R...
Deep digital flexor tendon shortening as a treatment for distal interphalangeal joint hyperextension in a 2-year-old mare.
Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T    December 5, 2006   Volume 19, Issue 4 250-254
Kelmer G, Kramer J.Shortening of the deep digital flexor tendon was performed by tenotomy, overlapping and anastomosis. The procedure was performed on a two-year-old Quarter Horse Mare with distal interphalangeal joint hyperextension with subluxation and metatarsophalangeal joint hyperextension. These problems originated from damage to the digital flexor tendons, presumably due to previous distal limb trauma. The procedure markedly improved the mare's level of comfort, degree of ambulation and limb conformation. Two years following surgery the mare was comfortable at pasture.

The radiographic findings considered included osseous fragments in fetlock (OFF) and hock joints (OFH), deforming arthropathy in hock joints (DAH) and distinct radiographic findings in the navicular bones (DNB) which were analyzed as binary traits, and radio...
Endothelial cell hypertrophy is associated with microvascular occlusion in horse wounds. Dubuc V, Lepault E, Theoret CL.Wound repair in horse limbs is often complicated by excessive fibroplasia and scarring. Occlusion of the microvessels populating the granulation tissue appears to be involved in the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix during the repair of limb wounds. This study aimed to determine whether endothelial cell hypertrophy or hyperplasia, or both, contribute to microvascular occlusion and whether the pericyte is involved in this anomaly. We created 5 wounds, each 2.5 x 2.5 cm, on both forelimbs and on the body of 6 horses. One limb was bandaged to stimulate excessive wound fibroplasia. We...
