Topic:Mares

Mares and horses are integral components of equine studies, focusing on the reproductive and behavioral aspects of equine biology. Mares, or adult female horses, play a significant role in breeding programs and are often studied for their reproductive physiology, gestation, and maternal behaviors. Horses, as a broader category, encompass both sexes and all age groups, providing a comprehensive view of equine anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Research in this area often investigates the differences and similarities between mares and other horses in terms of hormonal cycles, reproductive health, and social interactions. This page compiles peer-reviewed studies and scholarly articles that explore the biological and behavioral characteristics of mares and horses, offering insights into their roles in equine science and management.

Animals : an open access journal from MDPI    March 18, 2018   Volume 8, Issue 3 41 doi: 10.3390/ani8030041
McGreevy P, Berger J, de Brauwere N, Doherty O, Harrison A, Fiedler J, Jones C, McDonnell S, McLean A, Nakonechny L, Nicol C, Preshaw L, Thomson P....The aim of this study was to conduct a series of paper-based exercises in order to assess the negative (adverse) welfare impacts, if any, of common interventions on domestic horses across a broad range of different contexts of equine care and training. An international panel (with professional expertise in psychology, equitation science, veterinary science, education, welfare, equestrian coaching, advocacy, and community engagement; = 16) met over a four-day period to define and assess these interventions, using an adaptation of the domain-based assessment model. The interventions were consid...
Endometrial nitric oxide synthase activity in mares susceptible or resistant to persistent breeding-induced endometritis and the effect of a specific iNOS inhibitor in vitro.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    March 14, 2018   Volume 53, Issue 3 718-724 doi: 10.1111/rda.13162
Khan FA, Chenier TS, Foster RA, Hewson J, Scholtz EL.Emerging research suggests that the nitric oxide system may play a role in persistent breeding-induced endometritis (PBIE) in the mare. Differences in uterine nitric oxide (NO) levels between mares susceptible or resistant to PBIE and a dose-dependent inhibitory effect of NO on uterine contractility have been demonstrated. The objectives of this study were to investigate the difference in total nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity of the endometrium between susceptible and resistant mares and the effect of a specific inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitor on the endometrial NOS activ...
The association between gut microbiome, sex, age and body condition scores of horses in Maiduguri and its environs.
Microbial pathogenesis    March 9, 2018   Volume 118 81-86 doi: 10.1016/j.micpath.2018.03.018
Mshelia ES, Adamu L, Wakil Y, Turaki UA, Gulani IA, Musa J.The equine gut harbours complex microbial populations which influence physiology, metabolism, nutrition and immune functions, while disruption to the gut microbiota has been linked with conditions such as lameness, diabetes and obesity. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the association between microbial dysbiosis, sex, age and body condition scores (BCS) of horses (Equus equus caballus) in Maiduguri and its environs. Forty horses were assessed by convenient sampling, while faecal samples were collected and analyzed to determine the microbiomes in the various age groups wi...

Theriogenology    March 7, 2018   Volume 113 166-170 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2018.03.004
Mariella J, Iacono E, Lanci A, Merlo B, Palermo C, Morris L, Castagnetti C.The umbilical cord (UC), the connection between mother and fetus via the umbilical vessels, carries nutrients and oxygenated blood to the fetus through the umbilical vein and removes deoxygenated blood and waste products via the umbilical arteries. It is designed to protect blood flow to the fetus during pregnancy. In equine medicine, only a few studies have described the UC, and most of these involved Thoroughbreds. The present study describes and compares the macroscopic features of the equine umbilical cord in three different breeds and in relation to the foal's gender. In addition, a possi...
Effects of immunization against bone morphogenetic protein-15 and growth differentiation factor-9 on ovarian function in mares.
Animal reproduction science    March 6, 2018   Volume 192 69-77 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2018.02.015
Davis KA, Klohonatz KM, Mora DSO, Twenter HM, Graham PE, Pinedo P, Eckery DC, Bruemmer JE.Currently there is no contraceptive vaccine that can cause permanent sterility in mares. This study investigates the effect of vaccination against oocyte-specific growth factors, Bone Morphogenetic Protein 15 (BMP-15) and Growth Differentiation Factor 9 (GDF-9), on ovarian function of mares. It was hypothesized that immunization against these growth factors would prevent ovulation and/or accelerate depletion of the oocyte reserve. For this study, 30 mares were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 10/group) and vaccinated with BMP-15 or GDF-9 peptides conjugated to KLH and adjuvant, or a ...
Expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 as transcript and protein in the healthy and diseased equine endometrium.
Research in veterinary science    March 5, 2018   Volume 118 278-287 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2018.03.001
Schöniger S, Gräfe H, Richter F, Schoon HA.The enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) acts immunomodulatory and restricts bacterial growth. In the uterus of women and mice, it likely contributes to tissue homeostasis and disease pathogenesis. Pregnancy failure in mares is often caused by endometritis and endometrosis. The pathogenesis of nonsuppurative endometritis and endometrosis is still uncertain. To the authors' knowledge, no information on IDO1 expression in the equine endometrium is published. Aim of this study was to examine the presence of IDO1 as transcripts and proteins in the healthy and diseased endometrium of 25 mare...

Japanese journal of infectious diseases    February 28, 2018   Volume 71, Issue 2 116-121 doi: 10.7883/yoken.JJID.2017.291
Matsumura T, Mashiko R, Sato T, Itokawa K, Maekawa Y, Ogawa K, Isawa H, Yamamoto A, Mori S, Horita A, Ginnaga A, Miyatsu Y, Takahashi M, Taki H....The redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii Thorell) reportedly invaded Japan in September 1995. To date, 84 redback spider bite cases have been reported; 7 of these cases employed the antivenom. Antivenom has been imported from Australia in the past, but because of restrictions on exportation it was evident that nearly all of the antivenom present in Japan would expire during 2014. In 2014, a plan was proposed to experimentally manufacture and stockpile a horse antiserum for ourselves, using redback spiders indigenous to Japan. A total of 11,403 female spiders were captured alive: 1,217 from th...
Treatment of Hydropsical Conditions Using Transcervical Gradual Fetal Fluid Drainage in Mares With or Without Concurrent Abdominal Wall Disease.
Journal of equine veterinary science    February 27, 2018   Volume 64 81-88 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2018.02.021
Diel de Amorim M, Chenier TS, Card C, Back B, McClure JT, Hanna P.Hydropsical conditions are exceedingly rare in the horse. However, when they occur, they are true emergencies due to the severe enlargement of the pregnant uterus, which can result in clinical signs, such as an enlarged round abdomen, dyspnea, reluctance to walk, and colic, and may lead to the development of abdominal wall disease. The pathogenesis of hydropsical conditions is not fully elucidated, but they have been associated with placentitis and fetal abnormalities. This report describes six cases of hydropsical conditions in mares with or without concurrent abdominal wall disease. Five out...

Oberhaus EL, Thompson DL, Foster BA, Pinto CR.This experiment assessed the hormonal production, secretory aspects, and changes in luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor gene expression of early induced ovulatory-sized follicles relative to the first ovulatory-sized follicles occurring naturally in the spring. Anovulatory mares were treated on January 21 with (1) 50 mg of estradiol cypionate (ECP, n = 8) alone or (2) with ECP followed by two 3-g sulpiride injections (n = 8), 5 and 12 days later. Half of each group also received complete follicle ablation via transvaginal aspiration before ECP treatment. Ovaries were scanned regularly until ...
Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone associated with follicle selection, number of follicles, and ipsilateral vs contralateral relationships in mares.
Theriogenology    February 24, 2018   Volume 113 159-165 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2018.02.017
Ginther OJ, Domingues RR, Dangudubiyyam SV, Araujo ER.Diameter deviation or follicle selection during a follicular wave begins with continuous growth rate of F1 (dominant or selected follicle; DF) and decreasing growth rate of F2 (largest subordinate). Intraovarian patterns based on presence or absence of the DF and CL are DF-CL, DF, CL, and devoid (neither DF nor CL). The DF and CL relationships in a pair of ovaries are ipsilateral (DF-CL pattern and devoid pattern) and contralateral (DF pattern and CL pattern). The effects of patterns and relationships on F1, F2, and FSH during deviation were determined in 21 mares. Diameters of F1 and F2 at ex...

Stallion semen quality depends on major histocompatibility complex matching to teaser mare.
Molecular ecology    February 19, 2018   Volume 27, Issue 4 1025-1035 doi: 10.1111/mec.14490
Jeannerat E, Marti E, Berney C, Janett F, Bollwein H, Sieme H, Burger D, Wedekind C.The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) has repeatedly been found to influence mate choice of vertebrates, with MHC-dissimilar mates typically being preferred over MHC-similar mates. We used horses (Equus caballus) to test whether MHC matching also affects male investment into ejaculates after short exposure to a female. Semen characteristics varied much among stallions. Controlling for this variance with a full-factorial within-subject experimental design, we found that a short exposure to an MHC-dissimilar mare enhanced male plasma testosterone and led to ejaculates with elevated sperm nu...
Pregnancy Rates Following Low-Temperature Storage of Large Equine Embryos Before Vitrification.
Journal of equine veterinary science    February 16, 2018   Volume 64 12-16 doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2018.01.009
Diaz FA, Gutierrez EJ, Cramer E, Paccamonti DL, Gentry GT, Bondioli KR.Satisfactory pregnancy rates can now be achieved following the cryopreservation of large equine embryos. Nonetheless, its wide application might be limited by the fact that the cryopreservation of large equine embryos requires a specialized micromanipulation equipment and micromanipulation/vitrification skills. Alternatives should be developed to increase its utilization and widespread application in the commercial equine industry. To determine if large equine embryos are able to remain viable during transport from farms to specialized centers for embryo cryopreservation, we evaluated pregnanc...

Ewert M, Lüders I, Böröcz J, Uphaus H, Distl O, Sieme H.The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of stallion and mare, their ages, and maternal lineage on the gestation length (GL) in Thoroughbreds. In addition, additive genetic effects of the dam, stallion and fetus were analyzed. Data were taken from 1993 through 2009, and included 16,226 pregnancies from 5959 Th oroughbred mares mated with 290 different stallions. All analyses were performed using linear mixed models. The GL ranged from 306 to 390 days, with a mean length of 347.0 ± 14.4 days. Mating of mares with stallions aged 17 years and older resulted in a significantly ...
Equid herpesvirus 8: Complete genome sequence and association with abortion in mares.
PloS one    February 7, 2018   Volume 13, Issue 2 e0192301 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0192301
Garvey M, Suárez NM, Kerr K, Hector R, Moloney-Quinn L, Arkins S, Davison AJ, Cullinane A.Equid herpesvirus 8 (EHV-8), formerly known as asinine herpesvirus 3, is an alphaherpesvirus that is closely related to equid herpesviruses 1 and 9 (EHV-1 and EHV-9). The pathogenesis of EHV-8 is relatively little studied and to date has only been associated with respiratory disease in donkeys in Australia and horses in China. A single EHV-8 genome sequence has been generated for strain Wh in China, but is apparently incomplete and contains frameshifts in two genes. In this study, the complete genome sequences of four EHV-8 strains isolated in Ireland between 2003 and 2015 were determined by I...
Constituents of neutrophil extracellular traps induce in vitro collagen formation in mare endometrium.
Theriogenology    February 7, 2018   Volume 113 8-18 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2018.02.001
Rebordão MR, Amaral A, Lukasik K, Szóstek-Mioduchowska A, Pinto-Bravo P, Galvão A, Skarzynski DJ, Ferreira-Dias G.Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are DNA complexes carrying nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins, such as elastase (ELA), cathepsin-G (CAT) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Mare endometrosis is a chronic degenerative process characterized by excessive collagen in endometrium. While NETs fight bacteria that cause endometritis, they may trigger endometrial fibrogenesis. The aim was to evaluate the in vitro effect of some NETs components on mare endometrial fibrogenesis and determine its relationship with histopathology or estrous cycle. Endometrial explants were incubated with NETs components (ELA, ...
Serum bone biomarkers osteocalcin and pyridinoline in mares during pregnancy and lactation, and in foals during early post-natal life.
Research in veterinary science    January 31, 2018   Volume 118 34-40 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2018.01.007
Anderson ST, Kidd LJ, Barton AJ, Greer RM.Breeding mares typically foal yearly. Little is known about the dynamics of maternal bone stores during gestation and lactation, the timing of any maternal bone mobilisation, re-accretion post-foaling, or the dynamics of bone metabolism in foals. We measured serum osteocalcin (OC) and serum pyridinoline (PYD) concentrations in 18 mares monthly from 6months gestation to foaling, and in both mares and foals for 4months after birth. From 6 to 11months of gestation, there was no change in mean monthly OC. Serum PYD increased between 7months gestation and foaling. After foaling, mean serum OC was l...
Effects of two freezing methods and two cryopreservation media on post-thaw quality of stallion spermatozoa.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    January 30, 2018   Volume 53, Issue 2 519-524 doi: 10.1111/rda.13140
Macedo S, Bliebernicht M, Carvalheira J, Costa A, Ribeiro F, Rocha A.Glycerol-based extenders are widely utilized for freezing equine semen, but media combining methylformamide may better preserve sperm motility and mitochondrial function. Semen is cryopreserved utilizing either a Styrofoam box filled with liquid nitrogen or an automatic freezer. The objective of this experiment was to compare the post-thaw characteristics of the same ejaculates cryopreserved in a Styrofoam box or in an automatic freezer, utilizing a glycerol-based extender (Gent) and an extender that combines methylformamide and glycerol (BotuCrio ). For that, one ejaculate from 30 stallions c...
Inhibition of 5α-reductase alters pregnane metabolism in the late pregnant mare.
Reproduction (Cambridge, England)    January 16, 2018   Volume 155, Issue 3 251-258 doi: 10.1530/REP-17-0380
Wynn MAA, Ball BA, Legacki E, Conley A, Loux S, May J, Esteller-Vico A, Stanley S, Scoggin K, Squires E, Troedsson M.In the latter half of gestation in the mare, progesterone concentrations decline to near undetectable levels while other 5α-reduced pregnanes are elevated. Of these, 5α-dihydroprogesterone and allopregnanolone have been reported to have important roles in either pregnancy maintenance or fetal quiescence. During this time, the placenta is necessary for pregnane metabolism, with the enzyme 5α-reductase being required for the conversion of progesterone to 5α-dihydroprogesterone. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of a 5α-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride on pregnane metab...
High mortality in foals associated with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Abortusequi infection in Italy. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Abortusequi is frequently reported as a cause of abortion in mares and neonatal septicemia and polyarthritis in Asian and African countries, but only sporadically in Europe and the United States. We report an outbreak of S. Abortusequi in foals in Italy, characterized by high mortality. In a herd of Murgese horses, 10 of 34 newborns died at birth and a further 7 died, after developing severe clinical signs, during the first 10 d of life. Tissue specimens from different organs of 2 dead foals, synovial fluids from 4 sick foals, and vaginal and rectal ...
Patterns of conceptus development and of progesterone concentrations in maternal blood preceding spontaneous early pregnancy failure in mares.
Reproduction, fertility, and development    January 9, 2018   Volume 30, Issue 8 1066-1076 doi: 10.1071/RD17336
Betteridge KJ, Raeside JI, Waelchli RO, Christie HL, Hayes MA.Sixteen cases of spontaneous pregnancy loss (11 of singletons and five of pairs of twins) are described. The losses occurred between gestation Days 13 and 25 in 12 mares being monitored almost daily by transrectal ultrasonography (for measurement of conceptus growth) and blood sampling (for determination of maternal plasma progesterone concentrations as evidence of luteolysis) in experimental studies of early pregnancy. In 10 of the 16 cases the uterus was flushed and eight conceptuses were recovered for morphological assessment. Five of the 11 losses of singletons occurred before Day 16 and, ...
Evaluating the electrical impedance and mucus-related gene expression of uterine endometrial tissues in mares.
The Journal of reproduction and development    January 7, 2018   Volume 64, Issue 2 193-197 doi: 10.1262/jrd.2017-128
Kikuchi K, Kozai K, Hojo T, Sakatani M, Okuda K, Bai H, Kawahara M, Takahashi M.We investigated the electrical impedance of the reproductive tracts (vagina and uterine endometrial tissues) and the expression of mucus-related genes to identify the stage of the estrous cycle in mares. We first examined vaginal impedance in native Hokkaido mares during their estrous cycle and found no significant differences. However, impedance levels tended to decrease towards ovulation. Furthermore, we investigated the estrous cycle by measuring the electrical impedance of the uterine endometrial tissues obtained from carcasses of mares. We found that impedance levels in the endometrial ti...
Comparative histomorphological study of endometrium in mares.
Anatomia, histologia, embryologia    January 3, 2018   Volume 47, Issue 2 153-158 doi: 10.1111/ahe.12335
Herrera M, Herrera JM, Cantatore S, Aguilar J, Felipe A, Fumuso E.Uterine acute post-breeding inflammation is a physiological tissue response to the entry of exogenous elements, with persistent endometritis being the main pathology responsible for subfertility in the mare (Equus ferus caballus; Linnaeus, 1758). Mares can be classified as susceptible or resistant to endometritis according to their ability to remove intrauterine fluid within 48 hr after experimental inoculation. Endometrial biopsy is a technique that is commonly used to establish the degree of lesions that can affect the fertility of the mare. Endometrial histomorphometry is an objective and ...

Animal reproduction science    December 23, 2017   Volume 190 1-9 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2017.12.016
Oliveira Neto IV, Canisso IF, Segabinazzi LG, Dell'Aqua CPF, Alvarenga MA, Papa FO, Dell'Aqua JA.This study compared hormone treatments given to mares during anestrus, spring transition, and different stages of the estrous cycle, by assessing uterine features and pregnancy rates after embryo transfer (ET). Embryo recipient mares (n = 160) were equally arranged as follows: G1-spontaneous ovulation (control), G2-anestrus, G3-spring transition, G4-early estrus, G5-estrus, G6-diestrus, G7-early diestrus treated with a dose of dinoprost, and G8-early diestrus treated with two doses of dinoprost. At treatment initiation (Day-4), G2-7 were given dinoprost and estradiol-17β, thereafter, estr...
Maternal parity affects placental development, growth and metabolism of foals until 1 year and a half.
Theriogenology    December 21, 2017   Volume 108 321-330 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2017.12.019
Robles M, Dubois C, Gautier C, Dahirel M, Guenon I, Bouraima-Lelong H, Viguié C, Wimel L, Couturier-Tarrade A, Chavatte-Palmer P.Primiparous mares are known to produce smaller foals than multiparous mares. This difference seems to be partly explained by the reduced exchange surface and volume of the placental villi in primiparous compared to multiparous placentas. The effect of maternal parity on foals' post-natal growth, metabolism and sexual maturation, however, has been given little consideration. The objectives of this work were to analyse placental biometry and structure at term, growth of foals and yearlings, their metabolism and testicular maturation at one year of age. Twenty multiparous mares (M), aged over 6 y...
