The aim of this study was to determine if quinidine administration increases steady state serum digoxin concentration in horses. Mercury toxicosis caused by ingestion of a blistering compound in a horse. Mercury toxicosis by ingestion was diagnosed in a 3-year-old Quarter Horse mare with a history of anorexia and signs of abdominal discomfort. Acute rhabdomyolysis. Early aggressive medical therapy in horses with acute rhabdomyolysis is essential to prevent further muscle damage and secondary complications, such as laminitis and acute renal failure. A variety of pharmacologic agents may be helpful in the treatment of this condition but may have adverse affects if hydration status is not corrected first or concurrently with oral or intravenous fluids. Early aggressive therapy will help prevent irreversible muscle damage that could lead to poor performance in the future.

Renal dysplasia and benign ureteropelvic polyps associated with hydronephrosis in a foal. A 4-month-old male Trakehner foal with a history of hematuria, poor growth, and abnormal hair was found to have unilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter, as determined by ultrasonography and surgical exploration. Mucinous hyperplasia in the kidney and ureter of a horse. A case of mucinous hyperplasia in the right renal pelvis and ureter is reported in a 23-year-old, male, Quarter horse. The affected right renal pelvis was markedly distended and filled with inspissated yellowish-green mucous material compressing the adjacent cortical and medullary parenchyma. Multiple, similar masses were present protruding from the right urethral mucosa. Histologically, the masses were characterized by a cystic glandular and papillary hyperplasia of the mucosa of the renal pelvis and ureter. This is believed to be the first reported case in an equine species.

Biochemical and haematological changes following prolonged halothane anaesthesia in horses. Six healthy horses were anaesthetised with halothane (1.2 times the horse minimal alveolar concentration) in oxygen for more than 12 hours. Serum bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and L-iditol dehydrogenase values were significantly (P < 0.05) increased for up to nine days after anaesthesia. Hemodialysis for treatment of oxytetracycline-induced acute renal failure in a neonatal foal. Acute renal failure in a 4-day-old foal secondary to oxytetracycline toxicosis was treated by hemodialysis. Oxytetracycline had been administrered as treatment for forelimb flexor tendon contracture. Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent serine protease with anticoagulant and profibrinolytic activity which is synthesized in the liver.
