Laterality in the gallop gait of horses.
Journal of biomechanics    January 1, 1987   Volume 20, Issue 6 645-649 doi: 10.1016/0021-9290(87)90285-5
Deuel NR, Lawrence LM.Bilateral asymmetry in gallop stride limb contact patterns of four Quarter Horse fillies was documented by high-speed cinematography. Horses were filmed with rider by two cameras simultaneously while galloping along a straightaway. Even though signaled for each gallop lead an equivalent number of times, horses frequently switched leads, selecting the left lead nearly twice as often as the right. Velocities and stride lengths were greater for the left lead than the right, but stride frequencies did not differ between leads. Velocity effects were partitioned out in limb contact data analysis to ...
Plasma prolactin concentrations in non-pregnant mares at different times of the year and in relation to events in the cycle.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 269-276
Worthy K, Colquhoun K, Escreet R, Dunlop M, Renton JP, Douglas TA.Plasma prolactin concentrations were measured in mares using an homologous radioimmunoassay. An annual rhythm in plasma prolactin was found, with concentrations higher during the summer than during the winter. In addition to this seasonal pattern, occasional high concentrations of prolactin were seen when concentrations were otherwise basal. Blood samples taken from mares during an oestrous cycle in October-November showed that prolactin values were basal for most of the cycle, with a marked rise in prolactin shortly before the onset of oestrus. This prolactin peak was associated with an incre...
Phagocytosis of horse erythrocytes treated with equine infectious anemia virus by cultivated horse leukocytes.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1987   Volume 95, Issue 1-2 67-77 doi: 10.1007/BF01311335
Sentsui H, Kono Y.Horse erythrocytes treated with equine infectious anemia virus hemagglutinin were phagocytized by cultivated horse leukocytes (mainly macrophage-like cells and partly polymorphonuclear cells) after incubation with fresh horse serum but not with inactivated horse serum. The phagocytosis began as soon as the erythrocytes were added to the leukocyte cultures, and the majority of the reaction proceeded within 30 minutes. Addition of antiserum showed a slightly suppressing but no enhancing effect on the phagocytosis. Phagocytosis seemed to be caused by the recognition of the third complement compon...
The optics of comparative ophthalmoscopy.
Vision research    January 1, 1987   Volume 27, Issue 4 599-607 doi: 10.1016/0042-6989(87)90045-9
Murphy CJ, Howland HC.One factor peculiar to the practice of comparative ophthalmoscopy is the very large variation in ocular size of the animals examined, a factor which is ignored in current textbook treatments of the subject. We have computed values of lateral magnification, axial magnification, angular field of view and linear field of view for 19 species of terrestrial vertebrates. The dimensional value of a 1 diopter change in direct ophthalmoscopic focus was also determined. The anterior focal length of the eye in air and the vitreal refractive index were the intrinsic optical parameters of the animal's eye ...

Genetic differentiation associated with gait within American standardbred horses.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1987   Volume 18, Issue 4 285-296 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1987.tb00772.x
Cothran EG, MacCluer JW, Weitkamp LR, Bailey E.American Standardbred horses are divided into two groups based upon gait: the trot and the pace. The tendency to trot (diagonally opposite legs moving forward together) or pace (the two legs on the same side of the body moving forward together) appears to be genetically determined, although no formal genetic analysis has been undertaken. There is nearly complete assortative mating for gait; however, about 20% of the offspring sired by trotters are registered as pacers, while fewer than 1% of those sired by pacers are registered as trotters. Electrophoretically detectable genic variation at 13 ...

Comparison of two reference preparations for horse chorionic gonadotrophin in four in-vivo and in-vitro assays.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    January 1, 1987   Volume 79, Issue 1 281-287 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0790281
Cahoreau C, Combarnous Y.A number of horse chorionic gonadotrophin (CG) preparations of different purities and from diverse sources have been compared in radioimmuno-, radioreceptor, in-vitro cell culture, and in-vivo assays. The relative activities of the great majority of the preparations tested were consistent in the 4 assay systems. Moreover, their relative activities in the 4 assays were consistent with those found for unfractionated plasmas. These preparations were therefore considered to represent the native form of hormone. The second International Reference Preparation (IRP2) was among the few preparations ex...
Effect of Salmonella typhimurium endotoxin on PGF-2 alpha release and fetal death in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 485-492
Daels PF, Starr M, Kindahl H, Fredriksson G, Hughes JP, Stabenfeldt GH.The infusion of Salmonella typhimurium endotoxin into pregnant mares resulted in a biphasic release pattern of PGF-2 alpha as determined by 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF-2 alpha concentrations. The initial phase of 1 h duration was followed by accentuated release by 2 h after infusion; concentrations reached basal levels by 6 h. In 7 mares at 23, 26, 29, 33, 36, 53 and 55 days of gestation, fetal death occurred between 36 and 120 h after infusion; 12 mares at 46, 51, 56, 59, 65, 71, 73, 85, 103, 138, 283 and 318 days of gestation did not abort after endotoxin infusion. Luteal activity was compromi...

Comparative study of atrial fibrillation and AV conduction in mammals.
Heart and vessels. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 24-31
Meijler FL, van der Tweel I.Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias in humans. It also occurs quite frequently in dogs and horses. Comparative study of this arrhythmia may contribute to better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved. In this study, we present a quantitative analysis of atrial fibrillation in humans, dogs, horses, and in a kangaroo, making use of histograms and serial autocorrelograms of the ventricular rhythm with and without digitalis medication. Increase in the size of the animal and thus in the size of the heart is accompanied by a decrease in ventricular ...

Motility and ATP content of extended equine spermatozoa in different storage conditions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 103-107
Heiskanen ML, Pirhonen A, Koskinen E, Mäenpää PH.The role of various environmental conditions on sperm motility and ATP content was investigated by incubating raw and washed spermatozoa collected with an open-ended artificial vagina from 10 stallions in various biological and artificial media under different atmospheric conditions. Spermatozoa did not survive for more than 12 h when kept unextended in the original seminal fluid in any circumstances. The most favourable media tested for long-term sperm survival were Kenney's medium or Kenney's medium supplemented with 10 mM-theophylline and 10 mM-Hepes, pH 7.2. Centrifugation and slow cooling...

Reproductive patterns in cyclic and pregnant thyroidectomized mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 281-288
Lowe JE, Foote RH, Baldwin BH, Hillman RB, Kallfelz FA.Three Quarter-horse mares were thyroidectomized at about 1.5 years of age. Three similar intact mares served as controls. The study continued through two breeding seasons. The thyroidectomized mares were lethargic, rear limbs were oedematous and hair coats were coarse. They displayed a tranquil oestrous behaviour when exposed to a stallion and were only mildly antagonistic when not in oestrus. Length of oestrous cycles varied but most often they were 19-24 days long. Duration of oestrus (mean +/- s.e.m.) for the control and thyroidectomized mares was 12.9 +/- 2.9 and 11.7 +/- 2.2 days respecti...
Heparin-induced agglutination of erythrocytes in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 1 68-71
Moore JN, Mahaffey EA, Zboran M.Heparin was administered subcutaneously 2 times a day for 4 days to 5 horses. An additional group of 5 horses was used as time-matched controls. Significant decreases in PCV, erythrocyte count, and hemoglobin concentration were observed during heparin therapy. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of the heparin-treated horses increased to a peak value of 66.1 fl on the last day of treatment. Erythrocyte creatine concentration and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity increased moderately during the treatment. These data indicated that the rapid, profound increase in MCV during heparin therap...
Chemotactic and phagocytic function of peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leucocytes in newborn foals.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 599-605
Bernoco M, Liu IK, Wuest-Ehlert CJ, Miller ME, Bowers J.Chemotactic and phagocytic responsiveness of peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNLs) from 11 foals were analysed immediately after birth (pre-colostral) and at different times after colostrum ingestion. The number of foal PMNLs per microscopic field that had migrated through the filter in chemotaxis and the number of yeast particles ingested per foal PMNL in phagocytosis were significantly lower when tested with foal plasma before colostrum ingestion (chemotaxis, 2.0 +/- 0.55 (s.e.m.); phagocytosis, 0.98 +/- 0.352) than in tests 4 or more days after colostrum ingestion (chemotaxi...
Experimental large colon resection at the cecocolic ligament in the horse.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 1 5-12 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1987.tb00906.x
Bertone AL, Stashak TS, Sullins KE, Ralston SL.Ten normal horses had approximately 95% of the length of the large colon resected with a side-to-side anastomosis between right ventral and right dorsal colon performed with surgical stapling equipment. Four horses died shortly after surgery of colitis (1 horse) or failure of the TA 90 transection staple line (3 horses). Another horse died 4 months after surgery from disseminated streptococcal infection but had recovered well from the colon resection. Five horses survived long term (18 months) with no clinical evidence of adverse effects of the resection. Surviving horses had weight loss and s...
Molluscum contagiosum in a horse with granulomatous enteritis.
Journal of comparative pathology    January 1, 1987   Volume 97, Issue 1 29-34 doi: 10.1016/0021-9975(87)90124-1
Cooley AJ, Reinhard MK, Gross TL, Fadok VA, Levy M.Widespread cutaneous papules in a yearling Standardbred filly were attributed by light and electron microscopic examination to molluscum contagiosum. Concomitant granulomatous enteritis, suspected clinically due to protein-losing enteropathy, was verified histopathologically. An associated altered altered immune response is suggested as the reason for the widespread poxvirus infection.

Differentiation of meat from horse, donkey and their hybrids (mule/hinny) by electrophoretic separation of albumin.
Meat science    January 1, 1987   Volume 21, Issue 1 15-23 doi: 10.1016/0309-1740(87)90039-8
Malmheden Yman I, Sandberg K.Meat from the species horse, donkey and their hybrids, mule/hinny, can be reliably identified by determination of genetic variants of serum albumin by starch gel electrophoresis of meat extracts. Staining of the starch gel for carboxylesterase activity permits differentiation of most horses from donkeys while mules/hinnies cannot be distinguished from horses by their esterase activity alone.
The pathogenesis of dystocia and fetal malformation in the horse.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 547-552
Vandeplassche MM.From a total of 601 severe dystocias in mares, 408 (68%) of the fetuses were in anterior, 95 (16%) in posterior and 98 (16%) in transverse presentation, compared with 99%, 1% and 0.1% respectively for spontaneous parturitions. From the cases with anterior presentation, 151 (37%) showed reflected heads and necks. From the cases with posterior presentation, 47 (50%) presented hip flexions, 25% had hock flexions, and 25% had stretched hind legs, 45 (47%) of the fetuses were in lateral or ventral position, and 28 (30%) of the fetuses were malformed (mainly torticollis and head scoliosis). All 98 c...
[Differentiation of equine influenza viruses subtype 2 with monoclonal antibodies].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 41-46
Eichhorn W.Infections and clinical diseases caused by equine 2 influenza A viruses are observed worldwide. The frequency of these outbreaks supports the hypothesis that antigenic variation of the surface proteins may play an important role. For the demonstration of these variations, monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) were prepared. They are directed against the hemagglutinin or the neuraminidase of the prototype strain a/eq/Miami/1/63. In hemagglutination-inhibition assays with Mabs two reaction patterns were observed: four Mabs inhibited 14 out of 17 strains tested. Another Mab recognized the hemagglutinin of...
Effects of chronic administration of a monoclonal antibody against human renin in the marmoset.
Clinical and experimental hypertension. Part A, Theory and practice    January 1, 1987   Volume 9, Issue 8-9 1467-1478 doi: 10.3109/10641968709158996
Wood JM, Baum HP, Bews JP, Wachsmuth ED, Heusser C, Hofbauer KG.In this study, the hypotensive efficacy of R-3-36-16, a monoclonal antibody against human kidney renin, was investigated during chronic administration to a primate. R-3-36-16 was given by continuous intraperitoneal infusion with osmotic minipumps to normotensive marmosets fed a low-sodium diet in doses of 30 or 300 micrograms/kg/day for 14 days. The lower dose had no effect on blood pressure (BP) or plasma renin activity (PRA). After two days of treatment, the higher dose reduced PRA by 57% and lowered BP by 13 +/- 7 mm Hg. Although the hypotensive response persisted after 14 days of treatment...
Antithrombin III (ATIII) activity in plasmas from normal and diseased horses, and in normal canine, bovine and human plasmas.
Veterinary clinical pathology    January 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 1 14-18 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-165x.1987.tb00455.x
Johnstone IB, Petersen D, Crane S.Plasma Antithrombin III (ATIII) activity was quantitated in 24 clinically normal Standardbred/Thoroughbred horses using a clotting time technique. ATIII activity ranged from 80 to 106% of the pooled reference standard plasma, with a mean of 94%. Horses presenting with impaction or spasmotic colic (n=17) had normal plasma ATIII activity, while 15 horses presenting with acute diarrhea/colitis had significantly lower plasma ATIII activity with a mean of only 74% of the reference plasma. Seven horses presenting with liver disease had significantly higher plasma ATIII activity with a range of 127 t...

Totals of 153,084 mosquitoes from Santa Fe Province and 484 from Rio Negro Province were tested for virus in 2,351 pools. Seventeen virus strains were isolated, all from Santa Fe collections, as follows: 4 WEE, 6 Venezuelan equine encephalitis, 1 St. Louis encephalitis, 2 Antequera, 1 Maguari, 1 Melao, 1 new vesiculovirus (Calchaqui), and 1 Gamboa. The WEE virus isolates were from Aedes albifasciatus, Anopheles albitarsis, Mansonia species, and Psorophora...
Lipids in the laminated layer of liver, lung and daughter hydatid cysts of equine Echinococcus granulosus (Cestoda).
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1987   Volume 86, Issue 1 209-212 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(87)90199-4
Richards KS, Ilderton E, Yardley HJ.Lipids extracted from the laminated layers of horse liver and lung hydatids, including a daughter liver cyst, were analysed using TLC. No differences in lipid composition was detected in 11 liver cysts, whether from the same or different livers, and di- and triacylglycerols, cholesterol, wax and steryl esters, oleic acid, sphingomyelin, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl inositol and ceramide hexosides were detected. The daughter cyst differed from its "parent" cyst in lacking diacylglycerols and wax and steryl esters. The lung cyst differed from the liver cysts in that cholesterol, wax and st...
