Cardiovascular effects of amphetamine in the horse. Each of nine horses was treated with amphetamine alone, with atropine alone, and with amphetamine and atropine in combination. Cardiac effects of these drugs were studied by electrocardiography during resting and exercising states and immediately after exercise. Multiple hemangiosarcomas in the tarsal synovial sheath of a horse. A 2-year-old Standardbred colt with a history of intermittent lameness of the left hindlimb had hemangiosarcomatous involvement of the tarsal synovial sheath. Tibiotarsal and proximal intertarsal synovial sacs were visibly distended and there was pronounced distension of the tarsal synovial sheath. A large, firm mass was palpable in the sheath at about the level of the tuber calcis. Three circumscribed sessile growths were surgically excised from the sheath. The autoxidation of horse hemoglobin: the effect of glutathione. The reduced glutathione in the erythrocyte was found to inhibit the autoxidation of purified horse hemoglobin. It was observed that much higher concentrations of oxidized glutathione also stabilize hemoglobin. The stabilization by oxidized glutathione most likely involves the formation of a mixed disulfide with the reactive β-93 sulfhydryl groups on the hemoglobin. Study of the one-step growth curve of equine infectious anemia virus by immunofluorescence. Primary horse leukocyte cultures were inoculated with 2 or 10 50% tissue culture infective doses (TCID(50)) of equine infectious anemia (EIA) virus per cell, and the titer of cell-associated and fluid-phase virus was determined from 1 to 72 hr postinoculation (PI). Cover slips were collected from 4 to 72 hr PI and stained for EIA viral antigen by the indirect immunofluorescent (FA) technique.
