Aspergillus niger is a species of filamentous fungus widely used in industrial and feed applications for its capacity to produce a range of enzymes and organic acids. In equine nutrition, it is not the fungus itself but the fermentation products derived from A. niger—such as enzymes including cellulase, xylanase, amylase, and phytase—that are incorporated into feeds and supplements.

These enzyme preparations are used to improve nutrient digestibility by breaking down complex feed components like fiber, starch, or phytate-bound phosphorus. Enzymes produced by A. niger are typically included in stabilized, dried forms within pelleted feeds or powdered supplements.
