Bacillus licheniformis is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium commonly used in animal feed as a direct-fed microbial (DFM) or probiotic. It is known for its ability to produce enzymes such as proteases, amylases, and cellulases, which aid in the breakdown of feed components. This microorganism is naturally found in soil, water, and the intestinal tracts of animals and is recognized for its resilience, including its ability to form heat-resistant spores.

In equine nutrition, Bacillus licheniformis may be included in feed or supplements to support digestive efficiency and microbial balance within the gastrointestinal tract. Its enzymatic activity can help improve the digestion of complex carbohydrates and proteins, particularly in the hindgut where fiber fermentation occurs.
