It belongs to the Bifidobacterium genus, which is widely recognized for its role in maintaining gut microbial balance. As a probiotic, B. longum is often used in feed and supplement formulations to support intestinal health and microbial diversity.

In equine nutrition, B. longum is included in probiotic blends to modulate the hindgut environment, potentially improving fiber digestion and stabilizing gut flora, especially during periods of stress, dietary change, or antibiotic use.
