Propionibacterium freudenreichii is a gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium commonly used in the dairy industry, particularly in the fermentation of Swiss-type cheeses. It produces propionic acid, acetic acid, and carbon dioxide during fermentation.

In equine nutrition, P. freudenreichii may be included as a direct-fed microbial (DFM) to support gut health and microbial balance. Its production of short-chain fatty acids like propionate may contribute to beneficial fermentation patterns in the hindgut. It is typically incorporated into multi-strain probiotic blends.
