Lawsonia intracellularis proliferative enteropathy in a weanling foal in Australia. A 6-month-old Quarter Horse weanling filly was presented with lethargy, weight loss, inappetance, mild diarrhoea, marked ventral oedema and severe panhypoproteinaemia. Serum antibody titres for Lawsonia intracellularis were very high but PCR to detect faecal shedding of the organism was negative. Proliferative enteropathy due to L. intracellularis infection was diagnosed. After treatment for 4 weeks with oral erythromycin and rifampicin the filly made a complete recovery.
Unusual vascular ring anomaly in a foal. A 2.5-month-old filly was presented with signs of esophageal obstruction. The filly was euthanized and postmortem examination revealed a vascular ring anomaly. The vascular ring anomaly was not caused by a persistent right aortic arch, which is the only vascular ring anomaly reported to occur in horses. Identification of another B-cell epitope in the type-specific region of equine herpesvirus 4 glycoprotein G. Cowpox virus infection associated with a streptococcal septicaemia in a foal. Cowpox virus infection associated with a streptococcal septicaemia was diagnosed in a weak German Warmblood filly, born 29 days prematurely, and humanely destroyed on the sixth day of life. At necropsy, ulcerative lesions in the alimentary tract, colitis, polyarthritis and nephritis were observed. Transmission electron microscopical examination of specimens from ulcerative lesions revealed typical orthopox virions. Successful infestation by Amblyomma pseudoconcolor and A. cooperi (Acari: Ixodidae) on horses. The host relationships for most species of the genus Amblyomma are poorly known in Brazil. The ability of A. pseudoconcolor and A. cooperi to successfully feed on horses was investigated during ongoing research on the life cycle of these two species, which are primarily associated with wildlife. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of epizootic lymphangitis (EL) in 309 cart-mules (cart-pulling mules) in Bako and Ejaji towns, Western Ethiopia using clinical and microbiological examinations, between November 2002 and April 2003. Prevalence and demographic characteristics of exertional rhabdomyolysis in horses in Australia. The proportion of the horses, of both sexes and of different ages, breeds and levels of activity, owned by a stratified random sample of Australian owners, which had suffered one or more episodes of exertional rhabdomyolysis during the previous 12 months was determined. The proportion in the general population was 1.9 per cent, and horses which exercised were significantly more likely to have experienced the condition than horses which did not. There were significant differences between the sexes and between certain breeds and activity groups in the proportions of horses affected.
