[Equine pepsins].
Biokhimiia (Moscow, Russia)    January 1, 1976   Volume 41, Issue 7 1285-1290
Stepanov VM, Lavrenova GI, Rudenskaia GN, Gonchar MV, Lebareva LS.6 forms of pepsin are found in horse gastric juice. Amino acid sequence is determined of N-terminal (most variable) part of polypeptide chain of main pepsin components. Equine pepsines, which have pI 2.1 and 2.3, are found to have identical amino acid sequence at least for 31 amino acid residues. The same sequence is observed in the component with pI 2.6 for 10 first residues. The sequence of equine pepsin with pI 3.2 has 3 substitutions for 33 amino acids, when compared with pepsines having pI 2.1 and 2.3. The forms of equine pepsin studied are more similar than the other isoenzyme pair, huma...
Leptospiral antibodies in domestic animals in Tyrol.
Folia parasitologica    January 1, 1976   Volume 23, Issue 1 15-23
Sebek Z, Wallner H, Sixl W, Kaaserer G, Valová M.Results are presented of a serological examination of 1,547 domestic animals (cattle, pig, sheep, horse, goat, dog, cat) from 9 Tyrolian districts (Austria), performed in order to disclose the incidence of leptospirosis. Completely significant titres were domonstrated by means of the MAL test in the serotypes icterohaemorrhagiae or copenhageni, sorex-jalna, bratislava, sejroe and saxkoebing. In addition, antibodies were confirmed against L. bataviae, L. pomona, L. tarassovi and L. bulgarica, but the titres were insignificant. Of the animals examined, 7.2% gave positive reactions in titres of 1...
LDH and LDH isoenzymes of synovial fluid in the horse.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1976   Volume 17, Issue 2 178-189 doi: 10.1186/BF03547926
Rejnö S.LDH is an intracellular enzyme, which when cells degenerate is released to the extracellular spaces and body fluids. Cells and organs in the mammalian body differ from each other with respect to their LDH isoenzyme patterns. These circumstances have led to the use of LDH isoenzyme determinations in laboratory diagnostic work. In the present investigation total LDH activity and LDH isoenzyme distribution in equine synovial fluid from healthy joints, joints with serous arthritis, osteochondrosis dissecans and arthrosis, were determined. The fluids from the diseased joints differed from normal sy...
Serologic evidence of equine leptospirosis in the northeast United States.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1976   Volume 66, Issue 1 105-109
Smith RE, Williams IA, Kingsbury ET.Serologic testing for leptospiral antibody was conducted with the macroscopic agglutination test on 1,346 equine serum samples. These were collected from clinically normal horses in 123 purebred herds in the Northeast. Sixty-eight samples (5%) from the population tested reacted at significant levels (1:40 or higher) to one or more of the 5 serotype antigens used. These reactors were from 38 (31%) of the herds tested. Reactions to serotype pomona predominated in 25 (72%) of these 38 herds. Smaller numbers of herds had reactors to canicola, icterohemorrhagiae and grippotyphosa. No significant re...

Developments in biological standardization    January 1, 1976   Volume 33 171-177
Boudreault A, Boulay G, Marois P, Pavilanis V.Live human and equine influenza virus strains modified by serial passage on allantois-on-shell system (AOS) in the presence of normal horse serum were administered orally or intranasally to volunteers or horses. Mostly mild clinical short-lasting reactions, replication in nasal mucosae, transmission to placebo recipients and significant local or circulating antibody rises were observed following administration to volunteers of strains modified by five or less serial passages on AOS in the presence of normal horse serum (NHS). Milder clinical reactions, no replication, no viral transmission and...
Viscosity of equine synovial fluid.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1976   Volume 17, Issue 2 169-177 doi: 10.1186/BF03547925
Rejnö S.Synovial fluid samples from 51 light horses were examined with respect to their rhéologie properties. The analyses were made with a Rotovisco RV3 rotational viscosimeter. Samples from carpal, stifle and hock joints and from healthy joints, joints with synovitis and joints with infectious arthritis were studied. The analyses showed that synovial fluids from both healthy and diseased joints have complex rhéologie properties. In most samples the viscosity varied with the shear rates, the main exceptions being synovial fluids from joints with infectious arthritis. Flow curves (flow behaviour), r...

National Institute of Animal Health quarterly    January 1, 1976   Volume 16, Issue 2 59-64
Sutoh M, Saheki Y, Ishitani R, Inui S, Narita M, Hamazaki H, Yokota T.This is the first report on Eimeria leuckarti infection in foals in Japan. Seven Thoroughbred or Angloarabian foals 2 to 7 months of age raised in the Hidaka district, Hokkaido, were infected with E. leuckarti. They died of severe alterations caused by the larval migration of Strongylus vulgaris, and were examined over a period from 1970 to 1973. Protozoa of this species were observed in the small intestine in all the foals. They were found mostly in vacuoles of the cytoplasm of monoclear cells in the lamina propria at or near the tip of villi. Various stages of gametocytes, oocysts, and micro...
Termination of pseudopregnancy by administration of prostaglandin F2alpha and termination of early pregnancy by administration of prostaglandin F2alpha or colchicine or by removal of embryo in mares.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1976   Volume 37, Issue 1 35-39
Kooistra LH, Ginther OJ.At day 24 of gestation, pregnant mares were allotted to 1 of 5 treatment groups (3 to 5 mares/group): group A--nontreated controls; group B--intraembryonic injection of 4 mg of colchicine on day 24; group C--removal of embryo on day 24; group D--subcutaneous injection of 1.25 mg of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) on day 32; and group E--removal of embryo on day 24 and subcutaneous injection of PGF2alpha on day 32. In all mares treated with colchicine (group B), the fetal bulge was absent within 2 days. The interval from injection of colchicine to onset of estrus was very short (mean, 4 days)...
Meningoencephalomyelitis in horses associated with equine herpesvirus 1 infection.
Veterinary pathology    January 1, 1976   Volume 13, Issue 1 59-68 doi: 10.1177/030098587601300107
Charlton KM, Mitchell D, Girard A, Corner AH.During an outbreak of abortion caused by equine herpesvirus 1, a neurologic disease characterized clinically by dullness and ataxia occurred in several mares. Equine herpesvirus 1 was isolated from brain and lung of two severely affected mares. Histologically, both mares had disseminated meningoencephalomyelitis characterized by necrotizing arteritis, focal malacia in grey and white matter of brain and spinal cord, and accumulation of lymphocytes and neutrophils in paravertebral ganglia. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies occurred in foci of necrosis in thyroid adenomas of both mares.
The treatment of salmonellosis in Equidae.
Modern veterinary practice    January 1, 1976   Volume 57, Issue 1 47-51
Morse EV, Duncan MA, Fessler JF, Page EH.Among 23 Equidae in which various treatment or management regimens for salmonellosis were observed and evaluated, 9 horses were infected with Salmonella typhimurium and 8 with S anatum; an aged mule harbored S newport, and 1 isolant was not identified. Four dual sero-type infections occurred: 3 typhimurium/anatum and 1 anatum/newington. The results obtained with various antimicrobials in therapy of peracute, acute, and chronic infections were discouraging or questionable with regard to efficacy against salmonellae per se. The antimicrobial resistance patterns of the salmonellae and coliforms f...
Glucose utilization and recycling in ponies.
The American journal of physiology    January 1, 1976   Volume 230, Issue 1 138-142 doi: 10.1152/ajplegacy.1976.230.1.138
Anwer MS, Chapman TE, Gronwall R.Variables of glucose metabolism determined by the use of [U-14C]glucose were compared in fed and fasted ponies. Relative recycling of glucose carbon with respect to tritium in fed animals was negligible for 6-T and 3-T and 16% for 2-T studies; in fasted animals relative recycling was 12 and 14% for 6-T and 3-T studies, respectively. Minimal mass of total-body glucose decreased significantly in the fasted ponies. Based on relative recycling of carbon to tritium, a negligible fraction of plasma glucose was produced via the Cori cycle or from glycerol in fed ponies; recycled tricarbon units contr...
Animal behavior as a subject for veterinary students.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1976   Volume 66, Issue 1 73-81
Houpt KA.Knowledge of animal behavior is an important asset for the veterinarian; therefore a course in veterinary animal behavior is offered at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine as an elective. The course emphasizes the behavior of those species of most interest to the practicing veterinarian: cats, dogs, horses, cows, pigs and sheep. Dominance heirarchies, animal communication, aggressive behavior, sexual behavior and maternal behavior are discussed. Play, learning, diurnal cycles of activity and sleep, and controls of ingestive behavior are also considered. Exotic and zoo animal beha...
Effect of bile acid on hepatic excretion and storage of bilirubin in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1976   Volume 37, Issue 1 47-50
Engelking LR, Gronwall R, Anwer MS.Endogenous bilirubin uptake from plasma and biliary bilirubin excretion were determined in ponies with chronic biliary T-tube fistulas. Excreted bile was quantitatively recovered. Uptake was calculated from the plasma disappearance of 14C-labeled bilirubin. Biliary bilirubin excretion was determined directly in excreted bile. When bile acid excretion was low (during continuous drainage without bile acid replacment), bilirubin excretion was 37% less than uptake. Uptake and excretion were essentially identical when taurocholic acid was infused to replace bile acids. After depletion of the bile a...
Studies of possible movement of Venezuelan encephalitis virus from an enzootic focus in Guatemala during 1971-1974.
The American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene    January 1, 1976   Volume 25, Issue 1 163-172 doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.1976.25.163
Ordonez JV, Scherer WF, Dickerman RW.During the wet seasons of 1972 and possibly 1971, sentinel horses became infected by Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus in a temporally and geographically progressive manner inland from an enzootic marsh focus of virus on the Pacific couast of southeastern Guatemala. During the wet seasons of 1972 and 1973, VE virus was detected by sentinel horses (and a sentinel hamster in 1972) in a small woods 10 km north of the marsh, but virus was undetectable there during the dry seasons of 1973 and 1974 and the wet season of 1974. Culex (Melanoconion) mosquitoes were found in this woods and at the marsh...
Studies on erythrocyte metabolism following acute blood loss in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1976   Volume 8, Issue 1 34-37 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1976.tb03282.x
Smith JE, Agar NS.Anaemic horses do not provide reticulocytes during an erythropietic response. Acute blood loss was studied in 4 ponies as a model to monitor changes in erythrocyte metabolism during active erythropoiesis. Following phlebotomy, erythrocyte adenosine-5-triphosphate, adenosine-5-diphosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, and phosphoenolpyruvate increased signifcantly. The remaining glycolytic intermediates did not change. It is suggested that the determination of erythrocyte adenosine-5-triphosphate may be used to evaluate erythrocyte response following acute blood loss in the horse....
Incidence and nature of horse-riding injuries. A one-year prospective study.
Acta chirurgica Scandinavica    January 1, 1976   Volume 142, Issue 1 57-61
Gierup J, Larsson M, Lennquist S.A prospective one-year study of horse-riding accidents was performed in an area with a very high frequency of amateur riding. Totally 174 patients with riding injuries were registered--66% children--making an incidence of only 0.7 per thousand riding occasions. However, many of these injuries were of a severe nature, one leading to death and 27 of the patients reporting persisting symptoms at follow-up one year after the accident. Eleven per cent of the accidents lead to cerebral injuries and 44% to fractures, mainly of the upper extremities. Eleven per cent required hospitalization and 17% op...
[Comparative study of tracheal epithelium of different mammals].
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1976   Volume 94, Issue 2 262-282
Pavelka M, Ronge HR, Stockinger G.Tracheal epithelia of ten different mammals were investigated with the light and the electron microscope. Characteristic differences were found concerning the thickness of the epithelia, the length of the cilia, the density of the cells in the epithelia, the numerical distribution of the different cells and their ultrastructure. Special attention was paid to the morphology of the kinetosomes. Brush cells and chromaffin cells, which are sparsely distributed in the different tracheal epithelia, were discussed.

Treatment of horses with chronic diarrhea: immunologic status.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1976   Volume 37, Issue 1 29-33
Targowski SP.All chronically diarrheal horses given (orally) 2 series of treatments with normal horse serum recovered in 2 to 4 weeks. However, mild diarrhea sometimes persisted several months in the group of horses with severe diarrhea. Weight gains were approximately 35% in horses with severe diarrhea and approximately 10% in horses with mild diarrhea. Serum specimens from 12 diarrheal and 20 normal horses were examined for immunoglobulins by single radial immunodiffusion technique. Concentration of immunoglobulin A in serum of diarrheal horses was approximately 50% lower than that in serum of normal hor...
Cardiac monitoring during exercise tests in the horse. 2. Heart rate responses to exercise.
Australian veterinary journal    January 1, 1976   Volume 52, Issue 1 1-5 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1976.tb05358.x
Hall MC, Steel JD, Stewart GA.Data on resting heart rates, pre-exercise heart rates, the anticipatory rises before exercise, the influence of speed of work and recovery heart rates have been presented. Some observations on differences in the heart rate response on slow and fast working days are also recorded. In conformity with other workers, a linear relationship between heart rate and working speed within the range of 400-800 metre/min was observed. When the speed of work was between 400-800 metre/min, horses with resting ECG's classed as abnormal had significantly higher heart rates than those regarded as normal. It was...
