The development of equine immunity: Current knowledge on immunology in the young horse.
Equine veterinary journal    January 6, 2015   Volume 47, Issue 3 267-274 doi: 10.1111/evj.12387
Perkins GA, Wagner B.The development of equine immunity from the fetus to adulthood is complex. The foal's immune response and the immune mechanisms that they are equipped with, along with changes over the first months of life until the immune system becomes adult-like, are only partially understood. While several innate immune responses seem to be fully functional from birth, the onset of adaptive immune response is delayed. For some adaptive immune parameters, such as immunoglobin (Ig)G1, IgG3, IgG5 and IgA antibodies, the immune response starts before or at birth and matures within 3 months of life. Other antib...
Caesarean in mare by Marcenac incision under local anaesthesia.
Iranian journal of veterinary research    January 1, 2015   Volume 16, Issue 1 117-119
Ninu AR, Saxena AC, Sivanarayanan TB, Remya V, Binsila BK, Maiti SK, Zama MM.A nulliparous non-descript mare was presented with a complaint of dystocia. The mare was recumbent and physical examination revealed that the animal was in shock. There was no straining and foetal forelimbs were visible outside the vulva. The foetus was dead as there was no pedal reflex. Vaginal examination revealed anterior presentation with dorso-sacral position and rigid lateral head deviation. Pre-operatively, the mare was given 5 ml Tetanus toxoid and 3 g Ceftriaxone as intramuscular injection, and 5 ml Dexamethasone in 15 L of 5% Dextrose Normal Saline (DNS) as intravenous (i/v) infusion...

Sgorbini M, Bonelli F, Marmorini P, Biagi G, Corazza M, Pasquini A.The aim of the present work was to evaluate derivated reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) in mares and foals to study perinatal oxidative status. A total of 60 animals were included in the present study. Maternal and foal venous blood samples were collected immediately after delivery along with a sample drawn from one of the umbilical arteries, and plasma samples were evaluated for lactatemia, d-ROMs, and BAP. The t test for unpaired data was applied between mares versus umbilical artery blood versus foals, both for d-ROMs and BAP. The Pearson test w...
Post-thaw non-cultured and post-thaw cultured equine cord blood mesenchymal stromal cells equally suppress lymphocyte proliferation in vitro.
PloS one    December 1, 2014   Volume 9, Issue 12 e113615 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0113615
Williams LB, Tessier L, Koenig JB, Koch TG.Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) are receiving increased attention for their non-progenitor immunomodulatory potential. Cryopreservation is commonly used for long-term storage of MSC. Post-thaw MSC proliferation is associated with a lag-phase in vitro. How this lag-phase affect MSC immunomodulatory properties is unknown. We hypothesized that in vitro there is no difference in lymphocyte suppression potential between quick-thawed cryopreserved equine cord blood (CB) MSC immediately included in mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and same MSC allowed post-thaw culture time prior to inclus...

Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    November 27, 2014   Volume 203, Issue 2 250-252 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2014.11.013
Nagel C, Erber R, Ille N, Wulf M, Aurich J, Möstl E, Aurich C.Heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV) and salivary cortisol concentrations were determined in foals (n = 13) during the perinatal phase and until 5 months of age. In the fetus, HR decreased from 77 ± 3 beats/min at 120 min before birth to 60 ± 1 beats/min at 5 min before birth (P <0.01). Within 30 min of birth, HR increased to 160 ± 9 beats/min (P <0.01). Salivary cortisol concentrations immediately after birth were 11.9 ± 3.6 ng/mL and within 2 h increased to a maximum of 52.5 ± 12.3 ng/mL (P <0.01). In conclusion, increases in HR and sa...
Hyponatraemic encephalopathy in azotaemic neonatal foals: four cases.
Australian veterinary journal    November 27, 2014   Volume 92, Issue 12 488-491 doi: 10.1111/avj.12265
Hardefeldt LY.Four neonatal foals were presented, over a 2-year period, (2011-2012) with aimlessly walking, head pressing, 'chewing gum' seizures and ataxia. The neurological lesion was consistent with increased intracranial pressure in all cases. All foals had severe hyponatraemia and azotaemia identified on biochemistry. Hyponatraemia was transient in 3/4 cases, with the foal in the final case requiring long-term sodium supplementation. Three foals survived to hospital discharge; one was euthanased because of anuric renal failure and one of the surviving foals was euthanased with septic osteomyelitis 2 we...

Effects of orally administered galacto-oligosaccharides on immunological parameters in foals: a pilot study.
BMC veterinary research    November 19, 2014   Volume 10 278 doi: 10.1186/s12917-014-0278-4
Vendrig JC, Coffeng LE, Fink-Gremmels J.In the first phase of life, in which the immune system is primed and the bacterial colonization of epithelial surfaces takes place, foals are highly susceptible to bacterial infections. Next to strategies to optimize maternally acquired immunity in individual foals, current research explores other options to modulate immune responses in foals. During the past decades, oligosaccharide supplements were developed to mimic beneficial properties of the oligosaccharides, which are present in colostrum and milk. In human infants and laboratory animal species, dietary supplementation with galacto-olig...
The aggregation of four reconstructed zygotes is the limit to improve the developmental competence of cloned equine embryos.
PloS one    November 14, 2014   Volume 9, Issue 11 e110998 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0110998
Gambini A, De Stefano A, Bevacqua RJ, Karlanian F, Salamone DF.Embryo aggregation has been demonstrated to improve cloning efficiency in mammals. However, since no more than three embryos have been used for aggregation, the effect of using a larger number of cloned zygotes is unknown. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to determine whether increased numbers of cloned aggregated zygotes results in improved in vitro and in vivo embryo development in the equine. Zona-free reconstructed embryos (ZFRE's) were cultured in the well of the well system in four different experimental groups: I. 1x, only one ZFRE per microwell; II. 3x, three per microwell;...

Theriogenology    November 11, 2014   Volume 83, Issue 4 721-729 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2014.11.007
Klewitz J, Struebing C, Rohn K, Goergens A, Martinsson G, Orgies F, Probst J, Hollinshead F, Bollwein H, Sieme H.Color Doppler sonography has become routine for the evaluation of high-risk pregnancies in human medicine. Previous studies documenting uterine blood flow parameters in the pregnant mare have found a decrease in peripheral blood flow resistance in the first pregnancy weeks and an increase in uterine blood flow, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy. However, these studies involved only a small number of mares. No naturally occurring pregnancy abnormalities occurred that would allow blood flow changes to be retrospectively examined and analyzed. The objective of the present study was to...
Horse impoundments under Control of Horses legislation in the Munster region of Ireland: factors affecting euthanasia.
The Veterinary record    November 6, 2014   Volume 176, Issue 4 100 doi: 10.1136/vr.102742
Cullinane M, O'Sullivan E, Collins DM, Byrne AW, More SJ.Recently, considerable international attention has been paid to the problem of unwanted horses. In Ireland, stray horses, particularly in urban areas, are a further problem. The Control of Horses Act 1996 was enacted in response to an ongoing problem of uncontrolled horses in public places. As yet, no research work has been conducted focusing on stray horses in Ireland. This paper describes horses impounded under the Act in the Munster region of Ireland during 2005-2012 and the factors influencing decisions regarding their disposal. A logistic regression model was developed to investigate fact...
Intramuscular administration of a synthetic CpG-oligodeoxynucleotide modulates functional responses of neutrophils of neonatal foals.
PloS one    October 15, 2014   Volume 9, Issue 10 e109865 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0109865
Cohen ND, Bourquin JR, Bordin AI, Kuskie KR, Brake CN, Weaver KB, Liu M, Felippe MJ, Kogut MH.Neutrophils play an important role in protecting against infection. Foals have age-dependent deficiencies in neutrophil function that may contribute to their predisposition to infection. Thus, we investigated the ability of a CpG-ODN formulated with Emulsigen to modulate functional responses of neutrophils in neonatal foals. Eighteen foals were randomly assigned to receive either a CpG-ODN with Emulsigen (N = 9) or saline intramuscularly at ages 1 and 7 days. At ages 1, 3, 9, 14, and 28, blood was collected and neutrophils were isolated from each foal. Neutrophils were assessed for basal and R...

PloS one    October 8, 2014   Volume 9, Issue 10 e109212 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0109212
Dembek KA, Hurcombe SD, Frazer ML, Morresey PR, Toribio RE.Medical management of critically ill equine neonates (foals) can be expensive and labor intensive. Predicting the odds of foal survival using clinical information could facilitate the decision-making process for owners and clinicians. Numerous prognostic indicators and mathematical models to predict outcome in foals have been published; however, a validated scoring method to predict survival in sick foals has not been reported. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a scoring system that can be used by clinicians to predict likelihood of survival of equine neonates based on clinica...
