Physiological and behavioural responses of young horses to hot iron branding and microchip implantation. Branding is the traditional and well-established method used to mark horses, but recently microchip transponders for implantation have become available. In this study, behaviour, physiological stress variables and skin temperature in foals were determined in response to hot-iron branding (n=7) and microchip implantation (n=7). Surgical repair of the parotid gland in a gelding. The surgical repair of a traumatic injury to the parotid (Stenson's) duct of an adult horse is described and compared with previous reports. The diagnosis was confirmed by the analysis of a flow of saliva-like fluid observed while the horse was eating. The repair was attempted under general anaesthesia three days after the injury. Surgical anastomosis was considered to have improved the rate of healing. However, there was some evidence of leakage of saliva from the site for three days after the removal of the in-dwelling catheter, seven days postoperatively. A full recovery followed.

Heterotopic salivary tissue in a weanling colt. Heterotopic salivary tissue was diagnosed in a 7-month-old Quarter Horse colt with a history of a draining wound in the left temporal region from time of birth. Surgical excision of the tract was performed for diagnosis and treatment. Histologically, tissues were compatible with a mixed-type salivary gland, most likely of parotid salivary gland origin. Complete resolution of the drainage was achieved after surgical removal of the ectopic tissue.

Congenital atresia of the parotid salivary duct in a 7-month-old quarter horse colt. A 7-month-old Quarter Horse colt was examined because it had had a tortuous, distended vessel on the side of its head since birth. Equine whole saliva: variability of some major constituents. Whole saliva was collected from six horses over a period of five weeks in sufficient volume for the analysis of 10 constituents. There was considerable variation in the concentration of the analytes both between horses and between different days in the same horse. The most variable constituent was sodium, and the least variable was glucose, but this was derived from the sweet used to stimulate salivation. The use of whole saliva as a fluid for investigation would depend on achieving the minimum variability possible.
Salivary syndrome in horses: identification of slaframine in red clover hay. An outbreak of salivary syndrome in horses in North Carolina was investigated. Rhizoctonia leguminicola was the predominant fungus isolated from toxic red clover hay.
