Frequency and factors associated of potential zoonotic pathogens (Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Leishmania spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum) in equids in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
Parasites & vectors    May 22, 2021   Volume 14, Issue 1 275 doi: 10.1186/s13071-021-04777-4
Costa SCL, de Souza Freitas J, Carvalho FS, Pereira MJS, Cordeiro MD, da Fonseca AH, Gomes Jusi MM, Machado RZ, Munhoz AD.Currently, various zoonotic diseases are classified as emerging or reemerging. Because equids have a direct relationship with various vectors, they are possibly more frequently exposed to zoonotic agents than are humans. The undeniable importance of diseases such as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, spotted fever, and leishmaniasis for both public and animal health, as well as the possibility of equids acting as sources, reservoirs, or even sentinels for these pathogens, justifies the detection of their frequency and factors associated with infection in equids from northeastern Brazil. Methods:...

Development of a constant pressure perfused ex vivo model of the equine larynx.
PloS one    May 20, 2021   Volume 16, Issue 5 e0251530 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0251530
Otto S, Michler JK, Dhein S, Mülling CKW.Distal axonopathy is seen in a broad range of species including equine patients. In horses, this degenerative disorder of the recurrent laryngeal nerve is described as recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN). The dysfunctional innervation of the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle (CAD) leads to a loss of performance in affected horses. In general, ex vivo models of the larynx are rare and for equine patients, just one short report is available. To allow for testing new therapy approaches in an isolated organ model, we examined equine larynges in a constant pressure perfused setup. In order to chec...

Theriogenology    May 20, 2021   Volume 172 123-132 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2021.05.015
Alves BG, Alves KA, Hyde KA, Aguiar FLN, Souza SS, Brandão FAS, Garcia EC, Pinto Y, Gastal MO, Figueiredo JR, Teixeira DIA, Gastal EL.Ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT) is a technique well established and successfully applied in humans using mainly orthotopic or heterotopic transplantation sites. In livestock, OTT is still in its infancy and, therefore, different aspects of the technique, including the efficiency of different heterotopic OTT sites as well as the potential effect of age (i.e., young vs. old mares) in the ovarian graft quality, need to be investigated. The present study investigated the efficacy of the intramuscular (IM) or the novel subvulvar mucosa (SV) heterotopic autotransplantation sites to maintain the...
Switching of follicle destiny so that the second largest follicle becomes dominant in monovulatory species.
Theriogenology    May 20, 2021   Volume 171 147-154 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2021.05.002
Ginther OJ.During an ovulatory follicular wave in the monovulatory species of heifers, mares, and women, the two largest follicles deviate in diameter at the end of a common follicle growth phase. The largest follicle before deviation becomes the future ovulatory follicle in most ovulatory waves. In 10-30% of the ovulatory waves, the destiny of the two follicles switches just before or at deviation so that the second-largest follicle becomes the future ovulatory follicle, and the largest follicle becomes a subordinate. In FSH-driven switching in heifers, mares, and women, the wave-stimulating FSH surge d...

The present work investigates the putative inhibitory in vitro effect of NOSC on collagen type I alpha 2 chain () mRNA and COL1 protein relative abundance induced by ELA in endometrial explants of mares in the follicular or mid-lu...
Screening and detection of chromosomal copy number alterations in the domestic horse using SNP-array genotyping data.
Animal genetics    May 19, 2021   Volume 52, Issue 4 431-439 doi: 10.1111/age.13077
Pirosanto Y, Laseca N, Valera M, Molina A, Moreno-Millán M, Bugno-Poniewierska M, Ross P, Azor P, Demyda-Peyrás S.Chromosomal abnormalities are a common cause of infertility in horses. However, they are difficult to detect using automated methods. Here, we propose a simple methodology based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-array data that allows us to detect the main chromosomal abnormalities in horses in a single procedure. As proof of concept, we were able to detect chromosomal abnormalities in 33 out of 268 individuals, including monosomies, chimerisms, and male and female sex-reversions, by analyzing the raw signal intensity produced by an SNP array-based genotyping platform. We also demonstrat...

Evaluation of mare endometrial cytology using the novel cytotape technique.
Animal reproduction science    May 18, 2021   Volume 230 106770 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2021.106770
Ibrahim M, Ferrer MS, Ellerbrock RE, Rollin E.The cytobrush is considered the method of choice to obtain endometrial samples. Rigid brush fibers, however, may induce endometrial irritation and bleeding, or cell fragmentation, decreasing quality and diagnostic value of the samples. It was hypothesized that samples collected using a novel cytotape would provide sample smears of greater quality and less blood contamination than the cytobrush. Endometrial samples were collected with a cytotape and a cytobrush from ten mares without endometritis. Endometritis was then induced with artificial insemination, and samples were again collected 6 h a...
Formulation of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans in the control of equine gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes.
Veterinary parasitology    May 18, 2021   Volume 295 109458 doi: 10.1016/j.vetpar.2021.109458
Fausto GC, Fausto MC, Vieira ÍS, Freitas SG, Carvalho LM, Oliveira IC, Silva EN, Campos AK, Araújo JV.Equine gastrointestinal nematodiosis contributes to the lower productivity of these animals. There are growing reports of the emergence of nematodes resistant to the drugs used for decades in anthelmintic treatments. An alternative to the emergence of resistance may be the use of nematophagous fungi as a complementary method of treatment. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effects of the use of the product Bioverm® as a carrier of Duddingtonia flagrans, on pasture contamination level and equine parasitic burden. Sixteen mares were used, divided into two groups, one control and one t...

Drug testing and analysis    May 17, 2021   Volume 14, Issue 5 915-928 doi: 10.1002/dta.3041
Ohnuma K, Uchida T, Leung GN, Ueda T, Obara T, Ishii H.In the context of doping control, conventional direct chemical testing detects only a limited scope of target substances in equine biological samples. To expand the ability to detect doping agents and their detection windows, metabolomics has recently become a common approach for monitoring alteration of biomarkers caused by doping agents in relevant metabolic pathways. In horse racing, remarkable changes in metabolic profiles between the rest state and racing are likely to affect the identification of doping biomarkers. Previously, we reported a limited number of significantly upregulated met...
