The first case of equine motor neuron disease in Japan.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    February 1, 1994   Volume 56, Issue 1 195-197 doi: 10.1292/jvms.56.195
Kuwamura M, Iwaki M, Yamate J, Kotani T, Sakuma S, Yamashita A.A 9-year-old male horse showed emaciation, weakness and trembling and was euthanatized. Histopathological examinations revealed loss, swelling and chromatolysis of motor neurons throughout the spinal ventral horns, axonal degeneration of the ventral spinal roots. Eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were distributed in degenerated spinal ventral neurons. Ultrastructurally, the inclusions consisted of aggregations of granular dense material and a few vesicles. They reacted positively with polyclonal antibody against ubiquitin. The present case was diagnosed as equine motor neuron disease, which ...
Genetic blood markers in Arabian, Barb and Arab-Barb horses in Morocco.
Animal genetics    February 1, 1994   Volume 25, Issue 1 45-47
Ouragh L, Mériaux JC, Braun JP.Gene frequencies at 16 blood group and protein polymorphism loci (A, C, D, K, P, Q, U, Al, Gc, Es, A1B, Tf, PGD, PGM, GPI and Pi) are given for three horse breeds in Morocco (Arabian, Arab-Barb and Barb). These data are used to calculate average heterozygosity (h), Nei's standard genetic distance (DN) and probability of exclusion (PE). Variability expressed as the average heterozygosity was lower in the Arabian (0.330 +/- 0.066), while it was higher and almost the same in the Arab-Barb (0.413 +/- 0.071) and the Barb (0.414 +/- 0.070). The shortest genetic distance was found between Barb and Ar...
The dynamics of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, LH and FSH secretion during the spontaneous ovulatory surge of the mare as revealed by intensive sampling of pituitary venous blood.
The Journal of endocrinology    February 1, 1994   Volume 140, Issue 2 283-295 doi: 10.1677/joe.0.1400283
Irvine CH, Alexander SL.Conflicting views exist on the mode of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion during the ovulatory LH surge and the relative importance of changes in pituitary responsiveness to GnRH in generating the LH surge. This disagreement may stem from species differences and/or methodological problems. To provide data on the exact relationship between GnRH and gonadotrophin secretion during the spontaneous LH surge, we collected pituitary venous (PV) blood every 30 s for 3-4 h from eight mares and then assayed GnRH (in six of the mares), FSH and LH. Jugular blood was also collected from twelv...
Effects of heparin, venous strangulation obstruction of the small intestine, and reperfusion of the small intestine on plasma diamine oxidase activity in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    February 1, 1994   Volume 55, Issue 2 185-191
Laws EG, Freeman DE.Diamine oxidase (DAO), an enzyme of small intestinal origin, is released from mucosal storage sites by IV administration of heparin, to yield the plasma postheparin DAO (PHD) curve. The PHD curve is diminished when mucosal surface area is lost, and baseline (without heparin) plasma DAO activity increases when mucosal storage sites are damaged. Plasma DAO activity was measured after 2 doses of heparin were administered IV in healthy, conscious horses. In anesthetized horses, the PHD curve was studied: during sham small intestinal surgery, and during venous strangulation obstruction (VSO) of the...
[Examination of the ovarian activity of mares using progesterone profiles].
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    February 1, 1994   Volume 101, Issue 2 43-46
Bostedt H, Lehmann B.By means of clinical and analytical procedures (enzyme immuno assay for progesterone with microtiterplate method) the ovarian activity from 27 mares was tested over a period of several weeks. The measurement of the progesterone level to determine the time of ovulation was proved as suitable in the period of 1-2 days after ovulation. In normocyclic mares (n = 17) a different development of the progesterone profile was detected, so that an insufficient development of the corpus luteum (35%) could be considered. By means of continuous measurement of progesterone (> or = 30 days) six of ten mar...
[Detection of mycoplasmas in horses with respiratory diseases and their biochemical and serologic characterization].
Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    February 1, 1994   Volume 107, Issue 2 52-55
Shams Eldin HE, Kirchhoff H.Tracheal swabs were taken from 25 horses with respiratory diseases and investigated for mycoplasmas using three different media. Mycoplasmas could be isolated from 5 horses. The isolates were characterized by serological and biochemical methods. Four isolates could be identified as Mycoplasma equirhinis. The fifth isolate could not be typed. It did not react with antisera against mycoplasmas found in the respiratory tract of horses and its biochemical characteristics were different from the mycoplasmas described so far. It may represent a new species.
Effect of furosemide on plasma atrial natriuretic peptide and aldosterone concentrations and renin activity in running horses.
American journal of veterinary research    February 1, 1994   Volume 55, Issue 2 273-277
Cooley JL, Hinchcliff KW, McKeever KH, Lamb DR, Muir WW.Effects of furosemide administration on exertion-induced changes in plasma renin activity and plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide and aldosterone in horses during sustained submaximal exertion were examined. Furosemide (1 mg/kg of body weight) or heparinized saline solution was administered IV to each of 6 mares not conditioned to exercise, either 4 hours or 2 minutes before 60 minutes of sustained submaximal running on a treadmill. Horses ran at a speed that induced heart rate approximately 65% of maximal after saline treatment. After 15 minutes of running, furosemide suppress...
A new phenogroup in the horse D system of red cell alloantigens found in the Caspian pony.
Animal genetics    February 1, 1994   Volume 25, Issue 1 49-50
Cothran EG, Long YG.A new D blood group phenogroup consisting of the specificities adeo was observed in a stallion family of Caspian ponies from Iran. An additional six undescribed genetic variants were seen in a total of 82 Iranian horses. This result suggests extensive new genetic variation may be present in domestic horses from geographic regions that have not yet received scientific attention.
Jean-François Bouley (Bouley jeune). Pioneer investigator in intermittent claudication.
Spine    February 1, 1994   Volume 19, Issue 3 346-349 doi: 10.1097/00007632-199402000-00016
Sugar O.Reports of pathologic investigations as to the cause of intermittent claudication in horses were made in France in October, 1831, by veterinarian Jean-François Bouley. Obstructive clots in the femoral arteries were found to be responsible for the muscular changes causing limping. Bouley's work in the horse was used by Charcot in 1858 to understand the mechanism of claudication in the case of a soldier with gunshot wound in whom a traumatic aneurysm, clotting, and ischemia of the legs developed. This was not, however, the first medically reported case of human claudication from vascular occlus...
Echinococcus granulosus (Taeniidae) and autochthonous echinococcosis in a North American horse.
The Journal of parasitology    February 1, 1994   Volume 80, Issue 1 141-144
Hoberg EP, Miller S, Brown MA.We report the first documented case of autochthonous echinococcosis in a horse of North American origin. Three fully mature and viable unilocular hydatid cysts of Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) were an incidental finding at necropsy in the liver of a 14-yr-old gelding thoroughbred that had been foaled in Virginia and raised in Maryland. Protoscolices were armed with 2 rows of 28-37 rostellar hooks; small hooks measured 23-30 microns; large hooks measured 26-33 microns. Morphologically, these were compatible with rostellar armature considered typical for the equine strain of E. granulos...

Maddison JE.Fifty-nine reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were received by the Adverse Drug Reaction Subcommittee of the Australian Veterinary Association from April 1992-March 1993 inclusive. The number of reports received/number of animals involved per species was: dogs (30/43); cats (11/14); horses (8/10); cattle (9/30); ferret (1/1). Of these, 37 (63%) were classified as definite ADRs and 12 (20%) as probable ADRs. In 10 (17%) reports an ADR could not be substantiated or there was insufficient information available to make a decision. Twenty-three reports involved apparent hypersensiti...
Cardiovascular effects of intermittent positive pressure ventilation in the anesthetized horse.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    February 1, 1994   Volume 56, Issue 1 39-44 doi: 10.1292/jvms.56.39
Mizuno Y, Aida H, Hara H, Fujinaga T.Intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) is useful method for compensate of respiratory function in anesthetized horses. However, IPPV may decrease cardiac output. Alterations in cardiac output of three groups (N = 5) healthy, halothane-anesthetized mares were determined and compared during a 120 min period of anesthesia. The groups were as follows: spontaneous ventilation (SV), controlled ventilation using an end-inspiratory pressure of 20 cmH2O (CV20) and a third group using 25 cmH2O (CV25) inspiratory pressure. In the CV groups, respiratory function was adequately maintained. Altho...
Enterolithiasis in two zebras.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    February 1, 1994   Volume 204, Issue 3 430-432
McD○ LA, Dart AJ, Schiffman P, Parrot JJ.Enterolithiasis, as a cause of colic, was diagnosed and treated during surgical intervention in 2 Grant's zebras (Equus burchelli bohmi). The zebras were part of a wild herd in a zoo in the western United States. The clinical signs of enterolithiasis in both zebras were similar to those reported for horses. Analysis of the enterolith from 1 zebra revealed a composition identical to enteroliths that have been analyzed from horses. Three other zebras from this herd had enteroliths at necropsy. Enterolithiasis should be considered as a differential diagnosis for zebras with low-grade obstructive ...
Characterization of A/eq-1 virus isolated during the equine influenza epidemic in India.
Acta virologica    February 1, 1994   Volume 38, Issue 1 25-26
Singh G.The equine influenza virus, Ludhiana/5/87, isolated from the clinical material during the epidemic of equine influenza in India in 1987 was inhibited in haemagglutination-inhibition test by the antiserum against the prototype A/eq/Prague/1/56 (H7N7) virus and by post-epidemic horse sera. In haemagglutinin and neuraminidase analysis, the A/eq/Ludhiana/5/87 isolate appeared similar to the prototype A/eq/Prague/1/56 virus and was characterized as the H7N7 subtype.

Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    February 1, 1994   Volume 41, Issue 1 31-36 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1994.tb00062.x
Katayama Y, Oikawa M, Kaneko M, Yoshihara T, Yoshikawa H, Yoshikawa T.Three monoclonal antibodies capable of individually recognizing chondrocytes, osteoblasts and osteocytes were prepared. EB-1 reacted with a 55-kDa antigen on the chondrocyte membrane, EB-2 with a 110-kDa antigen on the membrane of osteoblasts and/or partial osteocytes, and EB-3 with a 130-kDa antigen on the membrane of osteocytes. These monoclonal antibodies may be useful probes for studying the differentiation and maturation of osteogenic cells.
The equine herpesvirus type 1 glycoprotein homologous to herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein M is a major constituent of the virus particle.
The Journal of general virology    February 1, 1994   Volume 75 ( Pt 2) 439-442 doi: 10.1099/0022-1317-75-2-439
Pilling A, Davison AJ, Telford EA, Meredith DM.Glycoprotein 45 is a major envelope glycoprotein of equine herpesvirus type 1. The gene encoding this protein is located between map units 0.615 and 0.636 on the virus genome and evidence has suggested that it is encoded by gene 52, one of four genes within this region. Using PCR we have amplified gene 52 and subsequently cloned it into a mammalian expression vector under the control of the human cytomegalovirus immediate early gene promoter. The gene was expressed in COS-7 cells and its product was detected by immunofluorescence and Western blotting. The results indicate that glycoprotein 45 ...
Structure determination of the disialylated poly-(N-acetyllactosamine)-containing O-linked carbohydrate chains of equine chorionic gonadotropin.

The identified oligosaccharide alditols have the following structure: [Formula: see text]
Detection of Borna disease virus RNA in naturally infected animals by a nested polymerase chain reaction.
Journal of virological methods    February 1, 1994   Volume 46, Issue 2 133-143 doi: 10.1016/0166-0934(94)90098-1
Zimmermann W, Dürrwald R, Ludwig H.Borna disease virus in naturally infected horses, a donkey and sheep was detected for the first time by amplification of viral RNA using PCR. In contrast to a control group of healthy horses, brain tissue was positive by this assay in all animals with neurological symptoms. The use of a second round of PCR with nested primers following Southern hybridization confirmed the specificity and increased the sensitivity of the test. Comparison with conventional methods recommends this technique for monitoring of BDV infections at a molecular level.
Polymorphism in the coding sequence of the horse transferrin gene.
Genome    February 1, 1994   Volume 37, Issue 1 157-165 doi: 10.1139/g94-020
Carpenter MA, Broad TE.Transferrin, the iron transport protein of the blood, is highly polymorphic in many species, including the horse. A number of sequence polymorphisms that distinguish several of the variants of horse transferrin are reported here. Previous studies indicated that exons 12 and 15 were likely to be polymorphic. Sequencing regions of exons 12 and 15 from D and R variants revealed 10 nucleotide substitutions that encoded six amino acid replacements. The F1, F2, H2, and * variants were identical to D, and the O variant was almost identical to R, in the regions studied. The data indicated that the hor...

The Veterinary record    January 29, 1994   Volume 134, Issue 5 113-115 doi: 10.1136/vr.134.5.113
van der Kolk JH, Mars MH, van der Gaag I.A 12-year-old Dutch warmblood mare was examined because it had suffered colic intermittently for a few years and had lost weight in the previous two months. Palpation per rectum revealed a large firm mass in the left sublumbar region; the mass was classified post mortem as an adrenocortical carcinoma. The basal plasma cortisol concentration (at 10.00) of the mare was 94 nmol/litre, within the normal range. As in another case of adrenocortical neoplasm, a functional tumour could not be demonstrated. Only one of the 21 horses with a neoplasm of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis examined by the a...
Prevalence and factors associated with development of laminitis in horses with duodenitis/proximal jejunitis: 33 cases (1985-1991).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 15, 1994   Volume 204, Issue 2 250-254
Cohen ND, Parson EM, Seahorn TL, Carter GK.Medical records of 116 horses admitted to the Texas Veterinary Medical Center between Jan 1, 1984 and Dec 31, 1991 with duodenitis/proximal jejunitis (DPJ) were reviewed. The prevalence of laminitis was 28.4% (33/116; 95% confidence interval: 20.2 to 36.6%). The prevalence of DPJ and DPJ-associated laminitis did not appear to vary significantly by year during the study period. Anamnesis, physical examination, clinicopathologic data, and initial treatment recorded at the time of admission were reviewed to determine risk factors associated with development of laminitis associated with DPJ. A tre...
Investigation of the metabolism of azaperone in the horse.
Journal of chromatography    January 14, 1994   Volume 652, Issue 1 23-33 doi: 10.1016/0378-4347(93)e0384-3
Chui YC, Esaw B, Laviolette B.Urine samples collected from a horse after intramuscular administration of 40 mg of azaperone were extracted at pH 10 before and after acid hydrolysis. The extracts were concentrated and analysed by LC-MS-MS. Two N-dealkylated metabolites, N-despyridinylazaperol and N-despyridinylazaperone, and a low concentration of azaperone were detected in the unhydrolysed urine. Six metabolites; hydroxyazaperol, two hydroxyazaperones, azaperol, N-despyridinylazaperol and N-despyridinylazaperone were detected in the hydrolysed urine extracts. Using XAD-2 resin extraction, three glucuronide conjugated azape...

Journal of animal breeding and genetics = Zeitschrift fur Tierzuchtung und Zuchtungsbiologie    January 12, 1994   Volume 111, Issue 1-6 121-127 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0388.1994.tb00445.x
Oki H, Willham RL, Sasaki Y.The Japan Racing Association (JRA) operates 10 national racecourses with both turf and dirt tracks. JRA formulates the rules for horseracing; registers owners, colors, and horses using foal registration; and licenses all JRA trainers and jockeys. In 1990, at the 10 racecourses there were 288 racing days, 3,353 races, and some 38,397 horses. Horse breeding is concentrated in 7 locations with 93% of the Thoroughbreds foaled each year coming from Hokkaido. Thoroughbred flat racing comprise 92% of all races held. Two year olds race together and nearly 40% of their races are run at 1200 m. Some 39%...
Serum hypoxanthine and xanthine concentrations in horses heterozygous for combined immunodeficiency.
Journal of animal breeding and genetics = Zeitschrift fur Tierzuchtung und Zuchtungsbiologie    January 12, 1994   Volume 111, Issue 1-6 148-151 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0388.1994.tb00448.x
Kettler MK, Weil MR, Mascotti K, Perryman LE.A group of diseases termed combined immunodeficiency (CID) results in a severe form of immunodeficiency. While CID in humans has two genetics bases, in Arabian it is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Kettler et al. (1989) determined that uric acid was significantly (p 0.05) between carrier and non-carrier horse's serum levels of hypoxanthine or xanthine. These data, combined with our previous ones suggest that an enzymatic lesion in the purine salvage pathway may occur at the urate oxidase step. Schumacher J, Spano JS, Wilson RC, DeGraves FJ, Duran SH, Ruffin DC.The pharmacokinetic properties of intravenously administered caffeine were studied in 10 horses using a commercially available automated enzyme immunoassay. The harmonic mean for the distribution half-life was 5.2 min (range 1.4-18.7). The harmonic mean for the elimination half-life was 10.18 h (range 6.82-20.92). The harmonic mean of the volume of distribution was 0.32 L/kg (range 0.22-0.53). There was no correlation between the dose of caffeine/kg body weight and the elimination half-life (Spearman's coefficient of rank correlation = 0.19).
Solitary osteochondroma of the nasal bone in a horse.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1994   Volume 84, Issue 1 25-31
Adair HS, Duncan RB, Toal RL.A 3-year-old Appaloosa stallion with a 4 cm x 4 cm x 2.5 cm mass protruding from his nasal bone was evaluated. Radiographs revealed an osseous mass, with a radiopaque outer margin and several radiolucent areas within the body of the mass. The mass was surgically removed and evaluated histopathologically. The histopathological diagnosis was osteochondroma. This case represent the first reported occurrence of an osteochondroma arising from intramembraneous bone in the horse.
