[The incidence of multiple ovulations in Dutch warmblood mares].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    May 15, 1997   Volume 122, Issue 10 277-279
Willink DL, Smeenk LA, van Oijen PW, de Kruif A.In the period 1994-1996 1030 oestruses of Dutch Warmblood mares were evaluated on the incidence of multiple ovulations diagnosed by rectal palpation. Ultrasonography was not used. All follicles > 25 mm were noted. The examination was repeated every 48 hours. The incidence of multiple follicle development was 7.3%. In a group of 50 ultrasonographically diagnosed twin-pregnant mares only 14 (28%) had been detected by rectal palpation as a multiple ovulation. This suggests an incidence of multiple ovulations in Dutch Warmblood mares of 7.3 x 1/28 x 100 = 26%. Restrictions of rectal palpation a...
Kinematics in horses at the trot before and after an induced forelimb supporting lameness.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 97-101 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05064.x
Galisteo AM, Cano MR, Morales JL, Miró F, Vivo J, Agüera E.The aim of this study was to analyse the biokinematic alterations caused by an induced lameness in the right forelimb of Dutch Warmblood (DWB) horses using a system of computer-aided normal videography. Five mature DWB were recorded with a videocamera (frame rate 1/25) from a lateral view before and after an induced lameness. Before videotaping, passive markers were placed on the skin, over easily identifiable anatomical references to determine the joint angles in the forelimb (always on the flexor side). Lameness was induced using special horseshoes. The lameness was evident at the trot and m...
[Equine motor neuron disease (EMND). A case report].
Tierarztliche Praxis    May 1, 1997   Volume 25, Issue 3 241-243
Landolt G, Feige K, Grest P.A 13-year-old warmblood mare was presented because of progressive weight loss, general weakness and trembling. On examination the horse stood with its head lowered and the limbs placed under the body. On lifting its head spasms of the neck muscles could be observed. At the same time the horse developed trembling over the lower neck and muscle fasciculations continued over the whole body. Additional signs included frequent recumbency, polyphagia and facial hyperaesthesia. The horse showed no signs of ataxia. Haematology was normal. Blood biochemistry revealed slight increased aspartate aminotra...
Effects of treadmill inclination on kinematics of the trot in Dutch Warmblood horses.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 71-75 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05058.x
Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Ooste , Barneveld A, Schamhardt HC.To evaluate the effects of uphill trotting on stride characteristics, 6 well trained Dutch Warmblood horses trotted at 4 m/s on a horizontal and on an inclined (6%) treadmill. This was done under 3 different conditions, unloaded, mounted by an experienced 90 kg rider and loaded with 90 kg of lead, to study whether extra weight provoked more or different alterations than the incline per se. In all 3 test situations (unloaded, mounted and lead-loaded), heart rates were significantly higher on the inclined treadmill than on the horizontal treadmill. Stride duration tended to increase on the incli...
Kinematic comparison of the leading and trailing fore- and hindlimbs at the canter.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 80-83 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05060.x
Back W, Schamhardt HC, Barneveld A.The canter is a 3 beat asymmetrical gait with a difference in timing between left and right limbs. To evaluate intralimb asymmetry at the canter, a group of 24 Dutch Warmbloods was evaluated on a treadmill (7 m/s) using a modified CODA-3 optoelectronic gait analysis system. Thirteen horses cantered in the left lead ('leading limb' group) and 11 in the right lead ('trailing limb' group) during left forelimb recordings, while 11 horses were at the left and 13 were at the right lead during left hindlimb recordings. Kinematic differences between horses from the 'leading limb' and 'trailing limb' g...
Joint moments and power in equine gait: a preliminary study.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 33-36 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05049.x
Colborne GR, Lanovaz JL, Sprigings EJ, Schamhardt HC, Clayton HM.A method is described for the estimation of joint moments of force and power in the equine forelimb using S-VHS video and force platform data. Video and force data were collected for 5 walking trials in a sound Dutch Warmblood horse. The sagittal plane positional and angular data were combined with the vertical and cranio-caudal ground reaction forces to calculate net joint moments of force in the sagittal plane across the carpal, fetlock and coffin joints during the stance phase of the forelimb. The mechanical power was calculated as the product of the netjoint moment and the joint's angular ...

Christensen P, Whitfield CH, Parkinson TJ.The ability of the glycosaminoglycan, heparin, and the calcium ionophore, A23187, to induce acrosome reaction in equine spermatozoa was assessed using semen from 3 warmblood stallions of known high fertility. After collection of semen, the spermatozoa were washed and incubated in vitro with heparin or A23187. Incubation periods were 0, 4, 6 or 8 h with 0, 1, 10 or 100 microg/ml heparin or 0, 10, 30 or 60 min with 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1 or 10 microM A23187, respectively. Acrosome reactions were determined by staining the spermatozoa with naphthol yellow S plus erythrosin B, and sperm viability was ass...
Biomechanical effects of rocker-toed shoes in sound horses.
The veterinary quarterly    January 1, 1996   Volume 18 Suppl 2 S75-S78
Willemen MA, Savelberg HH, Jacobs MW, Barneveld A.In many Western European countries rocker-toed shoes are applied routinely in sound horses. This is in contrast to most Anglo-Saxon countries where rocker-toed shoes are used almost exclusively for corrective or orthopaedic shoeing. The purposes of rocker-toed shoes are to hasten or facilitate breakover, or to encourage breakover to occur at the centre of the toe. This study compares the biomechanical effects of rocker-toed shoes with standard flat shoes in twelve sound Dutch warmblood horses, using a modified CODA-3 gait analysis system and a force plate. The variables analysed were speed of ...
Are kinematics of the walk related to the locomotion of a warmblood horse at the trot?
The veterinary quarterly    January 1, 1996   Volume 18 Suppl 2 S79-S84
Back W, Schamhardt HC, Barneveld A.In purchase examinations or at studbook selection sales the locomotor apparatus of horses is judged both at walk and trot. To evaluate whether kinematics of the walk are related to the locomotion at the trot, fore and hind limb movements of a group of 24 26-month-old warmbloods were recorded at walk and trot on a treadmill (1.6 and 4 m/s) using a modified CODA-3 gait analysis system. The intralimb coordination patterns at walk and trot were compared, and temporal and spatial variables of these gaits were related. Stride and stance durations (s) were shorter at the trot, while the stance distan...
Head and trunk movement adaptations in horses with experimentally induced fore- or hindlimb lameness.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1996   Volume 28, Issue 1 71-76 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1996.tb01592.x
Buchner HH, Savelberg HH, Schamhardt HC, Barneveld A.The kinematic patterns of head and trunk were studied in horses during induced supporting limb lameness to understand the mechanisms horses use to compensate for lameness and to evaluate different symmetry indices for their significance as lameness indicators. Using the locomotion analysis system CODA-3 the kinematics of 11 clinically nonlame Dutch Warmblood horses were recorded while walking (1.6 m/s) and trotting (3.5 m/s) on a treadmill. A transient lameness model, evoking pressure induced pain on the hoof sole, was used to induce 3 degrees of fore- and hindlimb lameness. Peak vertical disp...
Limb movement adaptations in horses with experimentally induced fore- or hindlimb lameness.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1996   Volume 28, Issue 1 63-70 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1996.tb01591.x
Buchner HH, Savelberg HH, Schamhardt HC, Barneveld A.The kinematic patterns of all limbs of 11 clinically nonlame Dutch Warmblood horses were studied during induced supporting limb lameness to gain insight into the compensation mechanisms horses use to manage lameness and to test kinematic limb variables for their significance as lameness indicators. Using the locomotion analysis system CODA-3, the kinematics of the horses were recorded while walking (1.6 m/s) and trotting (3.5 m/s) on a treadmill. A transient lameness model, evoking pressure on the hoof sole, was used to induce 3 degrees of fore- and hindlimb lameness. Joint angle patterns and ...

Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 390-393 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04075.x
Dik KJ, van den Broek J.From progeny lists of 30 Dutch Warmblood sires, 586 3-year-old females by these stallions were randomly selected, each progeny group aimed at 20 animals for statistical reasons. The front feet of the sires and female progeny were examined radiographically using lateromedial and dorsopalmar upright pedal projections. The radiological features associated with navicular disease were classified 0-4 using a standardised classification, grades 3 and 4 representing the more severe changes. The shape of the proximal articular border of the navicular bone outline on the dorsopalmar view was classified ...
Bilateral lameness in horses–a kinematic study.
The veterinary quarterly    September 1, 1995   Volume 17, Issue 3 103-105 doi: 10.1080/01652176.1995.9694543
Buchner HH, Savelberg HH, Schamhardt HC, Barneveld A.The kinematic pattern of mild bilateral lameness was studied by inducing a supporting limb lameness in both fore-limbs of 11 sound Dutch Warmblood horses. The kinematics of the horses were recorded while they trotted (3.5 m/s) on a treadmill. The locomotion analysis system CODA-3 was used to determine the temporal stride patterns, limb movements as well as head and trunk movement patterns. The transient lameness model, by which pressure-induced pain is evoked on the hoof sole, was used. Differences between left and right limbs as well as between the sound and the lame condition were tested usi...
Comparison of the workload of Dutch warmblood horses ridden normally and on a treadmill.
The Veterinary record    August 5, 1995   Volume 137, Issue 6 136-139 doi: 10.1136/vr.137.6.136
Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM, Barneveld A.Six Dutch warmblood horses, ridden by an experienced rider, cantered 3320 m at a speed adapted to the individual horse's anaerobic threshold, under four different conditions: 1, on a firm shell track with the speed varying from 6.5 to 9.4 m/s; 2, on a horizontal treadmill at the same speeds and for the same duration as in test 1; 3, on a horizontal treadmill for the same duration as in tests 1 and 2, but at a 10 per cent higher speed; and 4, on a treadmill at the same speed and for the same duration as in test 1, but at an inclination of 1 to 2 per cent adjusted individually to obtain heart ra...
Lag screw stabilization of a cervical vertebral fracture by use of computed tomography in a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 15, 1995   Volume 206, Issue 2 221-223
Barnes HG, Tucker RL, Grant BD, Roberts GD, Prades M.A traumatic fracture of C2 was diagnosed radiographically in a 1-year-old German Warm-blood stallion. Fracture configuration was difficult to see on survey radiographs. Computed tomography yielded a more accurate assessment of the fracture and facilitated fracture repair with cortical lag screws. Precise screw placement, to avoid spinal cord damage, was obtained by use of computed tomography. Follow-up radiography revealed normal bone healing, and the horse was in dressage schooling 24 months after surgery.
How the horse moves: 1. Significance of graphical representations of equine forelimb kinematics.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 1 31-38 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03029.x
Back W, Schamhardt HC, Savelberg HH, van den Bogert AJ, Bruin G, Hartman W, Barneveld A.The kinematics of 24 two-year-old Dutch Warmblood horses were recorded at the trot (4 m/s) on a high-speed treadmill to study the coordination of joints within the equine forelimb. Joint angle-time, angle-angle, stick, and marker diagrams were used to show forelimb motion graphically. Because the kinematic data referred to the joint angles of the horse standing squarely and were time-standardised to the duration of the stride cycle, mean joint curves could be calculated for the total group. The motion of each segment in the equine forelimb during a complete stride is described and its function...
[Two congenital anomalies of the urinary tract in warmblood horses: ectopia ureteris and diverticulum vesicae].
Tierarztliche Praxis    October 1, 1994   Volume 22, Issue 5 462-465
Odenkirchen S, Huskamp B, Scheidemann W.Two cases of congenital anomalies of the urinary tract of horses are described. In case 1 there was an ectopia ureteris sinistri in an one-year-old mare. The animal showed urinary incontinence without affects of the general condition. The diagnosis was made by rectal, ultrasonic and vaginoscopic examination. Therapeutically a nephrectomy of the left kidney was carried out. In case 2 a six-year-old gelding had a congenital diverticulum at the neck of the urinary bladder. It showed colic during urination, dropping of urine and haematuria. The diagnosis was made by rectal exploration, ultrasonic ...
