Developmental and comparative immunology    May 1, 1997   Volume 21, Issue 3 311-322 doi: 10.1016/s0145-305x(97)00008-6
Bullido R, Doménech N, Alvarez B, Alonso F, Babín M, Ezquerra A, Ortuño E, Domínguez J.A set of five monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against porcine major histocompatibility complex (MHC), or swine leukocyte antigens (SLA), class II molecules has been characterized. These mAbs appear to recognize monomorphic determinants on SLA-DR (2F4, 1F12 and 2E9/13) and SLA-DQ (BL2H5 and BL4H2) molecules, as assessed by flow cytometry and immunoprecipitation. By Western blot, the 2F4, 1F12, BL2H5 and BL4H2 epitopes were located on the beta-chains of these molecules. mAbs 2F4 and 1F12 crossreact with leucocytes of dog, cattle, horse and human; mAbs 2E9/13, BL2H5 and BL4H2 bind leucocytes of cattl...
Analysis of the equine jumping technique by accelerometry.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 45-49 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05052.x
Barrey E, Galloux P.The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the relationships between jumping technique and dorsoventral acceleration measured at the sternum. Eight saddle horses of various jumping abilities competed on a selective experimental show jumping course including 14 obstacles. An accelerometric belt fastened onto the thorax continuously measured the dorsoventral acceleration during the course. At each jump, 11 locomotor parameters (acceleration peaks, durations and stride frequency) were obtained from the dorsoventral acceleration-time curves. The type of obstacle significantly influenced the hind...
A unique metabolite of nimesulide.
Journal of analytical toxicology    May 1, 1997   Volume 21, Issue 3 197-202 doi: 10.1093/jat/21.3.197
Sarkar P, McIntosh JM, Leavitt R, Gouthro H.Nimesulide is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug recently detected in equine blood and urine samples taken at the race track. The detection of the drug in a blood sample led to the identification of an unknown thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) spot in track urine samples as a metabolite of nimesulide. Characterization of the unknown TLC spot and comparison with the synthesized compound shows that the unknown TLC spot is a previously unreported equine metabolite of nimesulide. The metabolite was identified as resulting from the reduction of the nitro group on nimesulide to an amino group. Thi...

Acute myelogenous leukaemia in a mare.
Australian veterinary journal    May 1, 1997   Volume 75, Issue 5 329-331 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1997.tb15702.x
Ringger NC, Edens L, Bain P, Raskin RE, Larock R.A 5-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented with a 4 week history of weight loss, fever and leukopenia. Rectally, a large active foetus, thickened spleen and an abdominal mass were palpated. Leukopenia, mild anaemia, marked thrombocytopenia and hyperfibrinogenaemia were found. Cytology and cytochemical staining of a bone marrow aspirate supported a diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukaemia. The mare deteriorated despite medical therapy and was humanely euthanased.
Importance of sphingolipids and inhibitors of sphingolipid metabolism as components of animal diets.
The Journal of nutrition    May 1, 1997   Volume 127, Issue 5 Suppl 830S-833S doi: 10.1093/jn/127.5.830S
Merrill AH, Schmelz EM, Wang E, Dillehay DL, Rice LG, Meredith F, Riley RT.Sphingolipids are highly bioactive compounds that participate in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, diverse cell functions, and apoptosis. They are present in both plant and animal foods in appreciable amounts, but little is known about their nutritional significance. Recent studies have shown that feeding sphingomyelin to female CF1 mice treated with a colon carcinogen (1,2-dimethylhydrazine) reduced the number of aberrant colonic crypt foci; longer-term feeding also affected the appearance of colonic adenocarcinomas. Therefore, dietary sphingolipids should be considered in studi...
Radiological assessment of the effects of a full rolling motion shoe during asymmetrical bearing.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 20-22 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05045.x
Caudron I, Miesen M, Grulke S, Vanschepdael P, Leroy P, Serteyn D.The authors used a new radiological method to assess asymmetrical articular compression of the interphalangeal joints. This method was based on the measurements of 3 angles obtained on dorsopalmar radiographs. Variations of these angles were studied during experimental asymmetrical bearing on unshod feet. It was concluded that 2 angles were interesting parameters to assess asymmetrical articular compression and to define the position of the phalanx in the horny box. Furthermore, variations of these angles induced by experimental asymmetrical bearing were compared without shoe, with a standard ...
Comparison of stride characteristics in a cantering horse on a flat and inclined treadmill.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 76-79 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05059.x
Kai M, Hiraga A, Kubo K, Tokurik M.The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was any difference in the stride characteristics between cantering on a flat or inclined treadmill. Five 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses were cantered on a treadmill at 3 different velocities and at 3 different slopes. The sequence of speeds at each slope was chosen at random and 16 mm cinefilms at 300 frames/s were taken from a lateral view at a distance of 15 m from the treadmill to record the linear and temporal data. On the slope, stride length, stride duration, stance duration and swing duration did not change. However, midstep lengt...

Kinematic analysis of the locomotion symmetry of sound horses at a slow trot.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 1, 1997   Issue 23 93-96 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb05063.x
Pourcelot P, Degueurce C, Audigié F, Denoix JM, Geiger D.This study of the locomotion symmetry was undertaken to provide standard symmetry indices of a group of sound horses at the trot. Using a 3D data collection system, the kinematics of the limb joints of 13 clinically nonlame horses were recorded while trotting in the standard conditions of the clinical lameness examination. A kinematic symmetry indice based on an inter-correlation method was defined and applied to the vertical displacement-time and joint angle-time diagrams of the left and right joints of the horses. For each horse, the mean symmetry indice of each joint was calculated using va...
Effect of antigen challenge on the activation of peripheral blood neutrophils from horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1997   Volume 62, Issue 3 253-260 doi: 10.1016/s0034-5288(97)90200-9
Marr KA, Foster AP, Lees P, Cunningham FM, Page CP.The effect of antigen challenge on the state of activation of peripheral blood neutrophils from horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been determined by measuring neutrophil superoxide anion formation. Prior to a seven-hour antigen challenge superoxide anion production by neutrophils from asymptomatic horses with COPD and normal horses in response to platelet activating factor (PAF) (with and without cytochalasin B), serum treated zymosan (STZ) and phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) was similar. Agonist-induced superoxide production by neutrophils from symptomatic COPD and ...
Melatonin protects mice infected with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.
Cellular and molecular life sciences : CMLS    May 1, 1997   Volume 53, Issue 5 430-434 doi: 10.1007/s000180050051
Bonilla E, Valero-Fuenmayor N, Pons H, Chacín-Bonilla L.We investigated whether the administration of melatonin (MLT) reduces the death rate and evolution of the disease in mice infected with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus. Our results show that, MLT protects mice infected with the virus. The mortality rate was reduced from 100% to 16% merely by increasing the dose from 0 to 1000 micrograms/MLT per kg body weight MLT significantly postponed the onset of the disease and death by several days. In surviving mice very high titres of VEE virus IgM antibodies were found seven weeks after virus inoculation. MLT significantly reduced VEE v...

Distribution and functional effects of neuropeptide Y on equine ureteral smooth muscle and resistance arteries.
Regulatory peptides    April 30, 1997   Volume 69, Issue 3 155-165 doi: 10.1016/s0167-0115(97)00003-7
Prieto D, Hernández M, Rivera L, García-Sacristán A, Simonsen U.The distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive (IR) nerves, as well as the functional effects of NPY and the Y1- and Y2-receptor agonists, [Leu31,Pro34]NPY and NPY(13-36), respectively, have been investigated in vitro in both visceral and arterial smooth muscle of the horse intravesical ureter. NPY-IR nerve fibres were widely distributed along the entire length of the ureter, although the intravesical part was the most richly innervated region, and the only one where NPY-IR ganglion cells were found. NPY (10(-7) M) did not affect either basal tone or spontaneous rhythmic contractions ...
Isolation and characterization of heparin- and phosphorylcholine-binding proteins of boar and stallion seminal plasma. Primary structure of porcine pB1.
FEBS letters    April 28, 1997   Volume 407, Issue 2 201-206 doi: 10.1016/s0014-5793(97)00344-x
Calvete JJ, Raida M, Gentzel M, Urbanke C, Sanz L, Töpfer-Petersen E.In the bovine, seminal plasma heparin-binding proteins bind to sperm lipids containing the phosphorylcholine group and mediate the capacitating effects of heparin-like glycosaminoglycans during sperm residence in the female genital tract. We report the characterization of heparin- and phosphorylcholine-binding proteins of stallion and boar seminal plasma. Horse seminal plasma proteins HSP-1 and HSP-2, and boar protein pB1, belong to the same family as the bull heparin- and phosphorylcholine-binding proteins BSP-A1/2, BSP-A3, and BSP-30K. We have determined the amino acid sequence and posttrans...
Treatment of a keratoma in a Clydesdale horse.
The Veterinary record    April 26, 1997   Volume 140, Issue 17 453-456 doi: 10.1136/vr.140.17.453
Chan CC, Munroe GA.A keratoma was diagnosed in a six-year-old Clydesdale gelding with recurrent 'pus in the foot'. The keratoma was excised through an inverted 'V' dorsal wall hoof resection up to 2 cm distal to the coronary band, the foot was bandaged and shod, and the horse treated with antibiotics and phenylbutazone. The dorsal hoof wall regrew completely and the horse gradually returned to full work.

Journal of chromatography. B, Biomedical sciences and applications    April 25, 1997   Volume 692, Issue 1 187-198 doi: 10.1016/s0378-4347(96)00393-3
Gu X, Meleka-Boules M, Chen CL, Ceska DM, Tiffany DM.A capillary electrophoresis (CE) and a solid-phase extraction method was developed for the determination of flunixin in equine urine and serum. The suitable CE run conditions were described. The factors affecting flunixin recovery rates were investigated and optimum solid-phase extraction conditions for flunixin in equine urine and serum were established. Limits of detection and quantitation were 3.4 and 5.6 ng/ml for serum and 16.9 and 33.1 ng/ml for urine, respectively. The recoveries exceeded 96% for urine and 79% for serum. Urine samples from race horses and urine and serum samples from a ...
Cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of the major core protein (p26) from equine infectious anemia virus.
Biochimica et biophysica acta    April 25, 1997   Volume 1339, Issue 1 62-72 doi: 10.1016/s0167-4838(96)00215-4
Birkett AJ, Yélamos B, Rodríguez-Crespo I, Gavilanes F, Peterson DL.The gene coding for the major core protein (p26) of the lentivirus equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) was cloned from EIAV infected serum, expressed in E. coli, and the resultant protein purified to electrophoretic homogeneity. The protein was expressed in a soluble form and was purified by conventional protein separation methods. When analyzed by SDS-PAGE, under both reducing and non-reducing conditions, the purified protein migrated as a 26 kDa monomer. Recombinant p26 (rp26), therefore, does not contain any intermolecular disulfide bond. Gel filtration chromatography also indicated that ...

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) versus conventional IVF on abattoir-derived and in vitro-matured equine oocytes.
Theriogenology    April 15, 1997   Volume 47, Issue 6 1139-1156 doi: 10.1016/s0093-691x(97)00095-2
Dell'Aquila ME, Cho YS, Minoia P, Traina V, Fusco S, Lacalandra GM, Maritato F.Conventional IVF as well as several assisted microfertilization techniques have shown limited success in the horse. After recent positive results achieved with intracytoplasmic injection of a single spermatozoon (ICSI) in human IVF, we chose to try the method in the horse. We compared conventional IVF to ICSI by fertilization rates of oocytes with compact and expanded cumuli and by developmental potential of the resulting embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were obtained by aspirating the follicular fluid from the ovaries of slaughtered mares. Complexes showing complete cumulus investment...
Lateral approach for endoscopic removal of solitary osteochondromas from the distal radial metaphysis in three horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    April 15, 1997   Volume 210, Issue 8 1166-1168
Southwood LL, Stashak TS, Fehr JE, Ray C.A lateral approach to the carpal sheath was used for endoscopic removal of osteochondromas from the distal aspect of the radius in 3 horses. Previously osteochondromas have been removed through an incision into the carpal sheath; however, endoscopy is less invasive, requires less surgery and convalescence time, provides better cosmetic results, is associated with a lower risk of infection, and allows better examination of structures within the sheath. A medial approach for endoscopic removal has been described previously; however, the lateral approach was advantageous, because it avoided the m...
Equine arteritis virus.
Theriogenology    April 15, 1997   Volume 47, Issue 6 1275-1295 doi: 10.1016/s0093-691x(97)00107-6
Glaser AL, Chirnside ED, Horzinek MC, de Vries AA.Equine arteritis virus (EAV) is a small, enveloped, positive-stranded RNA virus, in the family Arteriviridae , W.H.ich can infect both horses and donkeys. While the majority of EAV infections are asymptomatic, acutely infected animals may develop a wide range of clinical signs, including pyrexia, limb and ventral edema, depression, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. The virus may cause abortion and has caused mortality in neonates. After natural EAV infection, most horses develop a solid, long-term immunity to the disease. Marzz and geldings eliminate the virus within 60 days, but 30 to 60% of acut...
[Idiopathic pericardial effusion with tamponade in a Friesian gelding].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 15, 1997   Volume 122, Issue 8 216-219
Wijnberg ID, Vink-Nooteboom M, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.A 7-year-old Friesian gelding was referred to the Department of Large Animal Medicine and Nutrition of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine because of an inadequate response to treatment for vague symptoms of colic. An extensive physical examination showed there to be circulatory problems, with right-sided decompensation. Heart sounds were muffled on both sides of the thorax, and ECG showed a low voltage and variable amplitude of the QRS complex. Further investigations indicated idiopathic pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis was performed and supportive therapy started. Three weeks later th...
Epidemiologic aspects of Taylorella equigenitalis.
Theriogenology    April 15, 1997   Volume 47, Issue 6 1169-1177 doi: 10.1016/s0093-691x(97)00097-6
Parlevliet JM, Bleumink-Pluym NM, Houwers DJ, Remmen JL, Sluijter FJ, Colenbrander B.Contagious equine metritis (CEM) is a sexually transmissible disease in mares. Although the disease is commonly diagnosed by culturing the causative bacterium Taylorella equigenitalis (T. equigenitalis) . false negative results do occur. A recently developed Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay, however, appeared to be much more sensitive, with initial results indicating an unexpected high incidence of the agent in selected horses. In this study, samples from 107 randomly selected mares with no clinical signs of CEM submitted for conventional culture were all negative for T. equigenitalis . b...
A kinase-negative mutation of DNA-PK(CS) in equine SCID results in defective coding and signal joint formation.
Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950)    April 15, 1997   Volume 158, Issue 8 3565-3569
Shin EK, Perryman LE, Meek K.The equine SCID defect is more severe than its murine counterpart in that SCID foals are incapable of forming either coding or signal joints, whereas SCID mice manifest normal signal joint formation. To determine the basis of this difference and whether DNA-dependent kinase, catalytic subunit (DNA-PK(CS)), is involved in signal joint formation, equine DNA-PK(CS) transcripts were cloned and sequenced from normal and SCID cell lines. In the mutant allele, a frame-shift mutation truncates the protein N terminal of the domain with homology to the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase family resulting in c...
Control of equine infectious anemia virus is not dependent on ADCC mediating antibodies.
Virology    April 14, 1997   Volume 230, Issue 2 275-280 doi: 10.1006/viro.1997.8502
Tschetter JR, Byrne KM, Perryman LE, McGuire TC.Horses infected with equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) have recurrent episodes of viremia which are eventually controlled, but the immune mechanisms have not been identified. Antibodies were detected to the surface of EIAV-infected cells within 1 month postinfection and remained for at least 3.5 years postinfection. These antibodies recognized cell surface-exposed envelope (Env) glycoproteins, but could not mediate antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) using EIAV-WSU5-infected equine kidney (EK) cells as targets and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) or polymorphonuclear c...
An outbreak of respiratory disease in horses associated with Mycoplasma felis infection.
The Veterinary record    April 12, 1997   Volume 140, Issue 15 388-391 doi: 10.1136/vr.140.15.388
Wood JL, Chanter N, Newton JR, Burrell MH, Dugdale D, Windsor HM, Windsor GD, Rosendal S, Townsend HG.Lower respiratory tract disease developed in a group of racehorses in training between two and six years of age. Disease was observed in 22 of 25 horses for which full records were available. Seroconversion to Mycoplasma felis was demonstrated by indirect haemagglutination assay in 19 of 22 paired sera and high titres (> or = 64) were found in convalescent sera from the three remaining horses. Evidence of respiratory viral infection was confined to seroconversions to equine herpesvirus-4 in two of the horses. Tracheal wash samples, taken from four horses with visibly increased tracheal muco...
A novel family of viral death effector domain-containing molecules that inhibit both CD-95- and tumor necrosis factor receptor-1-induced apoptosis.
The Journal of biological chemistry    April 11, 1997   Volume 272, Issue 15 9621-9624 doi: 10.1074/jbc.272.15.9621
Hu S, Vincenz C, Buller M, Dixit VM.Molluscum contagiosum virus proteins MC159 and MC160 and the equine herpesvirus 2 protein E8 share substantial homology to the death effector domain present in the adaptor molecule Fas-associated death domain protein (FADD) and the initiating death protease FADD-like interleukin-1beta-converting enzyme (FLICE) (caspase-8). FADD and FLICE participate in generating the death signal from both tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (TNFR-1) and the CD-95 receptor. The flow of death signals from TNFR-1 occurs through the adaptor molecule tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated death domain protein (TRA...
