Ingestive mastication in horses resembles rumination but not ingestive mastication in cattle and camels.
Journal of experimental zoology. Part A, Ecological and integrative physiology    May 17, 2017   Volume 327, Issue 2-3 98-109 doi: 10.1002/jez.2075
Dittmann MT, Kreuzer M, Runge U, Clauss M.Horses achieve a higher degree of particle size reduction through ingestive mastication than functional ruminants. We characterized mastication using chew-monitoring halters (RumiWatch) in six domestic horses, cattle, and Bactrian camels each. All animals were offered grass hay of the same batch for 15 min. In cattle and camels, measurements were continued after eating until rumination was observed. Except for one horse, 96% of the horses' ingestive mastication data were identified as "rumination" by the proprietary RumiWatch algorithm, whereas ingestion and rumination by cattle and camels wer...

Part B consisted of a pilot clinical trial. Methods: Part A enrolled six adult Thoroughbred horses with percutaneous gastrotomy tubes. Intragastric pH was measured for continuous 23-h periods (08.00-07.00 h) for eight consecutive days (days 0-7). A si...
Update on the use of cyclooxygenase-2-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    May 17, 2017   Volume 250, Issue 11 1271-1274 doi: 10.2460/javma.250.11.1271
Ziegler A, Fogle C, Blikslager A.Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work through inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and are highly effective for the treatment of pain and inflammation in horses. There are 2 clinically relevant isoforms of COX. Cyclooxygenase-1 is constitutively expressed and is considered important for a variety of physiologic functions, including gastrointestinal homeostasis. Thus, NSAIDs that selectively inhibit COX-2 while sparing COX-1 may be associated with a lower incidence of adverse gastrointestinal effects. Various formulations of firocoxib, a COX-2-selective NSAID, labeled for use in horses are av...

Identification of key contributors in complex population structures.
PloS one    May 16, 2017   Volume 12, Issue 5 e0177638 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0177638
Neuditschko M, Raadsma HW, Khatkar MS, Jonas E, Steinig EJ, Flury C, Signer-Hasler H, Frischknecht M, von Niederhäusern R, Leeb T, Rieder S.Evaluating the genetic contribution of individuals to population structure is essential to select informative individuals for genome sequencing, genotype imputation and to ascertain complex population structures. Existing methods for the selection of informative individuals for genomic imputation solely focus on the identification of key ancestors, which can lead to a loss of phasing accuracy of the reference population. Currently many methods are independently applied to investigate complex population structures. Based on the Eigenvalue Decomposition (EVD) of a genomic relationship matrix we ...
Are horses capable of mirror self-recognition? A pilot study.
PloS one    May 16, 2017   Volume 12, Issue 5 e0176717 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0176717
Baragli P, Demuru E, Scopa C, Palagi E.Mirror Self-Recognition (MSR) unveils complex cognitive, social and emotional skills and it has been found only in humans and few other species, such as great apes, dolphins, elephants and magpies. In this pilot study, we tested if horses show the capacity of MSR. Four subjects living socially under naturalistic conditions were selected for the experiment. We adopted the classical mark test, which consists in placing a coloured mark on an out-of-view body part, visible only through mirror inspection. If the animal considers the image as its own, it will use its reflection to detect the mark an...
Antigen-specific immunoglobulin variable region sequencing measures humoral immune response to vaccination in the equine neonate.
PloS one    May 16, 2017   Volume 12, Issue 5 e0177831 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0177831
Tallmadge RL, Miller SC, Parry SA, Felippe MJB.The value of prophylactic neonatal vaccination is challenged by the interference of passively transferred maternal antibodies and immune competence at birth. Taken our previous studies on equine B cell ontogeny, we hypothesized that the equine neonate generates a diverse immunoglobulin repertoire in response to vaccination, independently of circulating maternal antibodies. In this study, equine neonates were vaccinated with 3 doses of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or equine influenza vaccine, and humoral immune responses were assessed using antigen-specific serum antibodies and B cell Ig var...

Frank N, Hermida P, Sanchez-Londoño A, Singh R, Gradil CM, Uricchio CK.Octreotide is a somatostatin analog that suppresses insulin secretion. Objective: We hypothesized that octreotide would suppress insulin concentrations in horses and that normal (N) horses and those with insulin dysregulation (ID) would differ significantly in their plasma glucose and insulin responses to administration of octreotide. Methods: Twelve horses, N = 5, ID = 7. Methods: Prospective study. An oral sugar test was performed to assign horses to N and ID groups. Octreotide (1.0 μg/kg IV) was then administered, and blood was collected at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 minu...
Trigeminal Nerve Root Demyelination Not Seen in Six Horses Diagnosed with Trigeminal-Mediated Headshaking.
Frontiers in veterinary science    May 15, 2017   Volume 4 72 doi: 10.3389/fvets.2017.00072
Roberts VL, Fews D, McNamara JM, Love S.Trigeminal-mediated headshaking is an idiopathic neuropathic facial pain syndrome in horses. There are clinical similarities to trigeminal neuralgia, a neuropathic facial pain syndrome in man, which is usually caused by demyelination of trigeminal sensory fibers within either the nerve root or, less commonly, the brainstem. Our hypothesis was that the neuropathological substrate of headshaking in horses is similar to that of trigeminal neuralgia in man. Trigeminal nerves, nerve roots, ganglia, infraorbital, and caudal nasal nerves from horse abattoir specimens and from horses euthanized due to...

Moine S, Flammer SA, de Jesus Maia-Nussbaumer P, Klopfenstein Bregger MD, Gerber V.This study attempted to determine: (1) if degree of dental malocclusion assigned prior to dental treatment was associated with equine rideability, assessed using a standardized score and (2) if performance dentistry improved this score. Methods: Thirty-eight Franches-Montagnes stallions. Methods: All horses were examined and assigned a dental malocclusion score by a veterinary dentist and randomized into two groups: sham treatment (Group S) and performance dentistry including occlusal equilibration (Group D). The horses were ridden twice before and three times after treatment by a professional...
High metabolic activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase not only in young but also in adult bone as demonstrated using a new histochemical detection protocol.
General and comparative endocrinology    May 11, 2017   Volume 258 109-118 doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2017.05.008
Maly IP, Eppler E, Müller-Gerbl M.Tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) is playing a key role in bone calcification, as has been demonstrated in different mammalian species including human and rodents. However, to investigate age-related changes during life history, histochemical demonstration of TNAP is severely hampered, particularly in the elderly, by technical difficulties associated with sectioning calcified tissue. Sufficient fixation must precede decalcification since poorly fixed bone tissue is exposed to the deleterious effects of decalcification reagents. In order to find a method that would allow cryosectio...
