Topic:Horse Breeds

Horse breeds represent the diverse genetic and phenotypic variations found within the species Equus ferus caballus. These breeds are categorized based on characteristics such as size, conformation, coat color, and temperament, which have been selectively bred over centuries to fulfill specific roles and functions. Common classifications of horse breeds include light horses, draft horses, and ponies, each serving different purposes ranging from riding and racing to work and companionship. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetics, history, and functional attributes of various horse breeds, as well as their impact on equine management and breeding practices.

Cloning of a DNA repeat element from horse: DNA sequence and chromosomal localization.
Genome    December 1, 1995   Volume 38, Issue 6 1132-1138 doi: 10.1139/g95-150
Broad TE, Forrest JW, Lewis PE, Pearce PD, Phua SH, Pugh PA, Stewart-Scott IA.A DNA repeat element, revealed initially by digestion of horse DNA with TaqI, was cloned and characterized by Southern and in situ hybridization studies and nucleotide sequencing. The clone, e4/1, consisted of 32 tandem reiteration of a unit repeat of 21-22 bp, and produced multilocus DNA fingerprinting profiles that were useful for parentage analysis in horses. The tandem repeat element was shown by in situ hybridization to be localized in the centromeres of the acrocentric but not metacentric classes of horse chromosomes.
Glucose and oxygen metabolism in the fetal foal during late gestation.
The American journal of physiology    December 1, 1995   Volume 269, Issue 6 Pt 2 R1455-R1461 doi: 10.1152/ajpregu.1995.269.6.R1455
Fowden AL, Silver M.With the use of [U-14C]glucose tracer methodology, the rates of umbilical uptake, utilization, oxidation, and production of glucose were determined in nine chronically catheterized fetal foals in the fed state between 268 and 325 days of gestation (term approximately 335 days). At the same time, the rates of umbilical O2 and lactate uptake were measured in all nine fetuses by Fick principle. The mean fetal rates of umbilical glucose uptake, glucose utilization, and CO2 production from glucose carbon were 36.9 +/- 2.5, 36.4 +/- 1.7, and 117.7 +/- 17.4 mumol.min-1.kg fetal body wt-1, respectivel...
The relationship between plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) level and body weight in the horse.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    December 1, 1995   Volume 57, Issue 6 1105-1107 doi: 10.1292/jvms.57.1105
Ozawa A, Inokuma H, Johke T.The relationship between plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) level and body weight was studied in six breeds of horse. The correlation coefficients between plasma IGF-I and body weight in males and females of 1 year old heavy horses (Percheron and Breton breeds) were 0.62 and 0.12 respectively. The mean plasma IGF-I of males was higher than that of females (p < 0.01). However, the plasma IGF-I levels of heavy horses did not exceed those of light horses (Thoroughbred) or ponies (Shetland and Falabella). These data suggest that IGF-I is at least related to the difference of body weigh...

Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    August 1, 1995   Volume 47, Issue 3-4 363-367 doi: 10.1016/0165-2427(94)05404-g
Marti E, Szalai G, Bucher K, Dobbelaere D, Gerber H, Lazary S.In order to isolate a part of the immunoglobulin E (IgE) heavy chain cDNA of the horse, primers have been designed based upon well conserved sequences in humans, sheep and rats. The PCR resulted in a 500 bp fragment which hybridised with a human IgE constant region probe. The fragment was cloned and sequenced and its derived protein sequence compared with the corresponding sequences in humans, sheep and mice. Most amino acids common to these three species are also shared by the horse.

[Heart rate fluctuations in the horse at rest: (2) Biological variation factors related to behavioural profile].
Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie III, Sciences de la vie    August 1, 1995   Volume 318, Issue 8 867-872
Clément F, Barrey E.Variability of heart rate was analysed within a sample of 30 horses in order to determine the influence of factors (animal, age, sex and breed) associated with different behavioural patterns. The heart rate fluctuations were analysed by computing the power spectral density of a series of heartbeat intervals. A generalized linear model was used to compare the spectra and to reveal the effect of each factor: animal age, sex and breed. The scale and shape of spectral densities were significantly different between animals. This individual variability was partly explained by the sex and age effects...

Journal of molecular evolution    August 1, 1995   Volume 41, Issue 2 180-188 doi: 10.1007/BF00170671
Ishida N, Oyunsuren T, Mashima S, Mukoyama H, Saitou N.The noncoding region between tRNAPro and the large conserved sequence block is the most variable region in the mammalian mitochondrial DNA D-loop region. This variable region (ca. 270 bp) of four species of Equus, including Mongolian and Japanese native domestic horses as well as Przewalskii's (or Mongolian) wild horse, were sequenced. These data were compared with our recently published Thoroughbred horse mitochondrial DNA sequences. The evolutionary rate of this region among the four species of Equus was estimated to be 2-4 x 10(-8) per site per year. Phylogenetic trees of Equus species demo...

Revista espanola de fisiologia    June 1, 1995   Volume 51, Issue 2 55-64
Agüera EI, Rubio MD, Vivo R, Santisteban R, Muñoz A, Castejón F.A study was performed on Andalusian horses in order to assess the response of heart rate and various blood parameters to training. Two tests were performed, at two and four months of training respectively. Exercise schedules were of increasing intensity, over a distance of 1000 meters. Speed was progressively increased, from 4 m/s to 8.5 m/s, over four exercise stages. In both tests, a recovery period of 5 min followed each stage. Sample collection (by puncture of the external jugular vein) was performed with the animals at rest, within the first minute after each exercise stage, and at 10, 15...
Electrocardiographic values in Spanish-bred horses of different ages.
Australian veterinary journal    June 1, 1995   Volume 72, Issue 6 225-226 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1995.tb03526.x
Ayala I, Montes A, Bernal LJ, Sandoval JA, Gutierrez C.The duration of electrocardiograph wave forms and intervals were determined in 179 Spanish-bred (Andalusian) horses aged from 1 month to 17 years. The values were compared with those of other breeds, and the relationship between electrocardiographic data and age was examined. High correlation coefficients were found between PR, ST and QT intervals and the age of the horses, and an inverted relation between heart rate and age was found. A multiple range analysis was made and the results suggest that significant changes in duration values and heart rate occurred at the age of 6 months and in the...
Histological and physical assessment of poor hoof horn quality in Lipizzaner horses and a therapeutic trial with biotin and a placebo.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 3 183-191 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03061.x
Zenker W, Josseck H, Geyer H.This paper represents the second part of a study searching for factors which could be responsible for an inferior hoof horn quality of the Lipizzaner horses of the Viennese Spanish Riding School (SRS) noticed in the late 1980s. It includes an evaluation of a treatment with biotin and 42 Lipizzaner horses were tested in a double blind study. The following parameters were evaluated: 1) the histology of the hoof horn in samples from the bearing border 2) the tensile strength of the coronary horn in bearing border samples and 3) the influence of biotin upon the histological changes and the tensile...
Hoof horn abnormalities in Lipizzaner horses and the effect of dietary biotin on macroscopic aspects of hoof horn quality.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 3 175-182 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03060.x
Josseck H, Zenker W, Geyer H.This study involved a macroscopic evaluation of hoof quality in 152 Lipizzaner horses (130 from Austria and 22 from other countries) and a controlled double blind trial of the effects of biotin on hoof horn growth and quality over 19 months in 42 stallions from the Spanish Riding School (SRS) in Vienna. Using a grading system that incorporated evaluation of horn wall, white line, sole and frog, the macroscopic study revealed the following: 90% of the Austrian Lipizzaners had soft white lines and crumbling, fissured horn at the bearing border of the walls; 39% of the stallions of the SRS, > ...
