Localization of tones by horses: use of binaural cues and the role of the superior olivary complex. The ability of horses to use binaural time and intensity difference cues to localize sound was assessed in free-field localization tests by using pure tones. Novel environment suppression of stallion sexual behavior and effects of diazepam. Pony stallions were given sexual behavior trials in experimental "home" and "novel" environments, similar in all major features except location. In the novel environment, erection latency was increased and erection time decreased. Treatment with an anxiolytic benzodiazepine derivative (diazepam) appeared to block these effects.

Humoral, hormonal and behavioral correlates of feeding in ponies: the effects of meal frequency. The effect of meal frequency on body fluid, glucose, triiodothyronine (T3), heart rate and behavior was measured in 10 ponies. A simple reversal design was used in which each pony received one meal/day (1X) for 2 wk and six meals/day (6X) for 2 wk. The total intake/day was held constant. Feeding was followed by a rise in plasma levels of glucose, T3, protein and osmolality. Alterations in coagulation and hemograms of horses given endotoxins for 24 hours via hepatic portal infusions. This experiment was designed to establish a model for the study of gastrointestinal disturbances as a result of prolonged endotoxin uptake in the horse. The hepatic portal vein of 7 horses was catheterized (through flank incisions) to give chronic hepatic portal infusions of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin). Feeding and drinking behavior of mares and foals with free access to pasture and water. The feeding and drinking behavior of 11 mares and 15 foals living on pasture with free access to water was recorded during 2,340 15-min focal samples taken over 2 yr. Lactating mares on pasture spent about 70% of the day feeding. Foals began feeding on their first day of life. Psychogenic colic in a horse. A 4-year-old mixed-breed gelding was presented with colic-type behavior of 5 days' duration that included pawing, looking at the flank area, and kicking and biting at the abdomen and flank when it was eating hay or grain. Electroencephalographic patterns of clinically normal, sedated, and tranquilized newborn foals and adult horses. Coprophagy by foals: effect of age and possible functions. In colts and fillies observed from birth to 24 weeks old, coprophagy occurred from Weeks 1 to 19. Its frequency was greatest during the first two months. Coprophagy was rarely observed in mares and stallions. Dose-related effects of fentanyl on autonomic and behavioral responses in performance horses. The dose-related effects of intravenously administered fentanyl (0.010, 0.005, 0.0025 mg/kg) and saline were studied in mature performance horses using a rigorous experimental protocol. Fentanyl produced a dose-related prolongation of the skin twitch reflex latency but did not increase the hoof withdrawal reflex latency. The effect of estradiol and progesterone on the sexual behavior of ovariectomized mares. Daily treatment (5 days) with estradiol resulted in increased levels (p less than 0.05) of proceptive behavior in ovariectomized as compared to control mares (N = 8 per treatment) within 4 hr of injection and for the 4 subsequent days. Neurological examination of newborn foals. Behaviour and response to neurological testing of apparently healthy newborn foals differed significantly from the adult in several ways. Cutaneous pain thresholds to pinprick, pinch, and heat stimuli were quantified during control and electroacupuncture trials in 23 horses. Modified Forssell’s operation for crib biting in the horse. Thirty-five horses with a history of crib biting or wind sucking were treated with a modification of the Forssell procedure. The technique involved bilateral neurectomy of the ventral branch of the accessory nerve combined with excision of a portion of the omohyoideus, sternohyoideus, and sternothyroideus muscles. The external genitalia consisted of mammary gland, vulva and hypertrophic clitoris; the inner genitalia of rudimental testes. The sexual behaviour was typically male-like. Assessment of the sexual behavior of pregnant mares. Pregnant mares (N = 12) were observed with a stallion from early gestation until parturition for sexual behavior. Induction of male sex behavior in pony mares with testosterone propionate. Two pony mares were administered 150 mg of testosterone propionate every other day for 20 days (ten injections) and every ten days there-after.
