Investigations of the horse conceptus via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nitroxide spin labels as contrast agents.
Free radical research communications    January 1, 1990   Volume 9, Issue 3-6 391-397 doi: 10.3109/10715769009145699
Oehler UM, Janzen EG, Betteridge K, Fyfe C, Towner RA, Savage N, Scodras J.Results are presented which illustrate the usefulness of Magnetic Resonance Imaging as applied to the study of living embryos. Nitroxide spin labels were employed as contrast agents to study the structure and properties of the embryos. These spin labels offer the additional advantage that they may potentially be bound to biologically important molecules thereby imparting the ability to produce contrast in the MR images to these new molecules. The horse conceptus was chosen over other embryos due to its large size. Whereas the embryos of cattle and swine are sub-millimetre in size, the horse co...
Prevalence of gastric lesions in foals without signs of gastric disease: an endoscopic survey.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1990   Volume 22, Issue 1 6-8 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1990.tb04193.x
Murray MJ, Murray CM, Sweeney HJ, Weld J, Digby NJ, Stoneham SJ.Gastroendoscopic examinations were conducted on 75 Thoroughbred foals aged two to 85 days on seven breeding farms in England and Ireland. The foals showed no signs of gastric disease. There was no significant difference between lesion prevalence in foals in England (16 of 28 foals; 57 per cent) or Ireland (22 of 47 foals; 47 per cent). Neither was there any sex predilection (18 of 36 males; 20 of 39 females). Lesions were most prevalent in foals under 10 days old (8 of 9) and least prevalent in foals older than 70 days (3 of 10). Lesions occurred most frequently in the squamous mucosa immediat...

Multifocal innervation and muscle length. A morphological study on the role of myo-myonal junctions, fiber branching and multiple innervation in muscles of different size and shape.
Anatomy and embryology    January 1, 1990   Volume 182, Issue 3 273-283 doi: 10.1007/BF00185520
Zenker W, Snobl D, Boetschi R.The dependence of the inner organisation and innervation of a skeletal muscle on its size was studied at the level of single muscle fiber architecture and motor endplate topography in muscles of different size, all of them lacking a tendinous scaffolding. The muscles evaluated in this study were: Mm. sternomastoideus, gracilis and latissimus dorsi of the rat and the M. sternocephalicus of the horse. In these muscles a subdivision into two or more 'innervation-compartments' becomes obvious in fascicles reaching a certain length. This provides the possibility of an almost synchronous activation ...

The immunocytochemical distribution of seven peptides in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia of horse and pig.
Anatomy and embryology    January 1, 1990   Volume 181, Issue 3 271-280 doi: 10.1007/BF00174620
Merighi A, Kar S, Gibson SJ, Ghidella S, Gobetto A, Peirone SM, Polak JM.The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), enkephalin, galanin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), somatostatin, tachykinins and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was compared in cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral segmental levels of spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia of horse and pig. In both species, immunoreactivity for the peptides under study was observed at all segmental levels of the spinal cord. Peptide-immunoreactive fibres were generally concentrated in laminae I-III, the region around the central canal, and in the autonomic nuclei. A general increase in the number of i...
Equine infectious anemia: prospects for control.
Developments in biological standardization    January 1, 1990   Volume 72 49-57
Issel CJ, McManus JM, Hagius SD, Foil LD, Adams WV, Montelaro RC.Equine infectious anemia has been managed in most countries by the imposition of testing and quarantine regulations. In the United States, about 700,000 of the more than 7,000,000 horses are tested annually. As long as the status of greater than 90% of the horse population remains unknown and horses are transported and congregate in a relatively unrestricted manner, EIA will continue to exact its toll. Therefore, it is incumbent on the scientific community to continue to develop and refine practical and sensitive diagnostic tests for EIA which will be used in an expanding market, to reduce the...
Influence of preinduction methoxamine, lactated Ringer solution, or hypertonic saline solution infusion or postinduction dobutamine infusion on anesthetic-induced hypotension in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1990   Volume 51, Issue 1 17-21
Dyson DH, Pascoe PJ.A controlled study of the cardiovascular responses in horses anesthetized with acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg of body weight, IV), guaifenesin (100 mg/kg, IV), thiamylal (5.0 mg/kg, IV), and halothane in O2 (1.2 to 1.4% end-expired concentration) was performed to determine whether hypotension could be prevented by use of various treatments. Six horses were given 5 treatments in a randomized sequence: no treatment (control), methoxamine (0.04 mg/kg, IV), lactated Ringer solution (20.0 ml/kg, IV), 7.5% hypertonic saline solution (4.0 ml/kg, IV), or constant infusion of dobutamine (5.0 mg/kg/min, IV) d...
Pathways of lymph flow from superficial tissues in the legs of horses.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1990   Volume 48, Issue 1 119-123
Perkins NR, Heath TJ.Pathways of peripheral lymph flow from the legs in horses were studied with casts, and with light and electron microscopic techniques. Although lymph nodes in horses occur in large groups, each lymph vessel draining from the periphery appeared to terminate on a single node within a group. The larger branches of each vessel divided either on the node surface or after penetrating into the node, and 25 to 60 terminal afferent vessels entered either the subcapsular, medullary or trabecular sinuses. Numerous initial efferent lymphatics arose either within the medulla, or at its surface, and they of...
Platelet function in the racing thoroughbred: implication for exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage.
Veterinary clinical pathology    January 1, 1990   Volume 19, Issue 2 35-39 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-165x.1990.tb00540.x
Weiss DJ, McClay CB, Smith CM, Rao GH, White JG.Platelet function was evaluated in horses with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeder) and in control horses (nonbleeder). Platelet aggregation, secretion, and adhesion to rabbit aortic subendothelium were similar for bleeders and nonbleeders. Platelets readily aggregated in response to ADP, thrombin, collagen, and arachidonic acid, but platelet secretion occurred only with high concentrations of thrombin. Platelets readily adhered to rabbit aortic subendothelium and tended to form large thrombi rather than platelet monolayers or aggregates. These data suggest that horses may be predis...
Common injuries in horseback riding. A review.
Sports medicine (Auckland, N.Z.)    January 1, 1990   Volume 9, Issue 1 36-47 doi: 10.2165/00007256-199009010-00004
Bixby-Hammett D, Brooks WH.The most common location of horse-related injuries is the upper extremity (24% to 61%) with injuries to the lower extremity second in frequency (36% to 40%). The head and face sustain 20% of horse-related injuries. The most common type of injury is a soft tissue injury (92% to 1%), followed by a fracture (57% to 3%). Concussion is the third most common type of injury (63% to 2%). The most frequent cause of hospitalisation is concussion (38% to 4%) with fracture second. The most common injury which leaves residual impairment is injury to the central nervous system. The age at which most injury ...
Temperature sensitivity of equine herpesvirus isolates: a brief review.
SAAS bulletin, biochemistry and biotechnology    January 1, 1990   Volume 3 124-128
Jacob RJ, Price R, Bouchey D, Davis T, Borchelt J.This article reviews the findings on temperature sensitivity of equine herpesvirus isolates with an emphasis on equine herpesvirus 3, etiological agent of equine coital exanthema. The hypothesis is presented that the relative apathogenic nature of this herpesvirus may be an indirect result of its inability to synthesize and/or process glycoproteins needed by the virus to produce infectious virions at the normal body temperature of its natural host. It is suggested that equine herpesvirus 3 is the more evolved and naturally attenuated member of the equine herpesviruses.
The carbohydrate side chains of the major plasma serpins of horse and wallaby: analyses of enzymatic and chemically treated (including ‘Smith degradation’) protein blots by lectin binding.
Biochemistry international    January 1, 1990   Volume 20, Issue 3 429-436
Patterson SD, Bell K.The carbohydrate side chains of the major plasma serpins of the horse and wallaby have been characterized by lectin analyses of protein blots from two-dimensional gels using the major human plasma serpin, alpha 1-protease inhibitor, as a control. Eight lectins were used in the characterization in conjunction with enzymatic deglycosylation of complex and high mannose side chains, chemical desialylation and defucosylation, and one round of 'Smith degradation', all being performed on the nitrocellulose blots. Assuming a standard complex side chain structure, the results of the 21 lectin/treatment...
Equine postanaesthetic myositis: a possible role for free radical generation and membrane lipoperoxidation.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1990   Volume 48, Issue 1 42-46
Serteyn D, Mottart E, Deby C, Deby-Dupont G, Pincemail J, Philipart C, Lamy M.A method for the evaluation of total plasma antihydroxyl and antiperferryl activity is described. This method was applied to horse plasma obtained during halothane anaesthesia. In horses suffering from postanaesthetic myositis, a significant decrease in the antiperferryl activity was observed during anaesthesia particularly when the muscular compression produced by the weight of the horse was released. In the affected muscles, strong oxidants could therefore be generated during the reperfusion of the ischaemic muscles and might initiate membrane lipid peroxidation. This phenomenon could possib...
Ileocecal intussusception in horses: 26 cases (1981-1988).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 1, 1990   Volume 196, Issue 1 121-126
Ford TS, Freeman DE, Ross MW, Richardson DW, Martin BB, Madison JB.The case records of 26 horses with ileocecal intussusception over a 7-year period were reviewed to determine clinical features of the disease and response to treatment. The median age of horses with ileocecal intussusception was 1 year and ranged from 2 weeks to 19 years. There was no apparent gender or breed predisposition to this disease. An acute form of ileocecal intussusception was diagnosed in 19 horses with signs of moderate to severe abdominal pain of less than or equal to 24 hours' duration, and a chronic form was diagnosed in 7 horses with signs of intermittent, mild to moderate abdo...
Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from animal and human sources in Brazil.
The British veterinary journal    January 1, 1990   Volume 146, Issue 1 50-56 doi: 10.1016/0007-1935(90)90076-f
Lopes CA, Moreno G, Curi PR.The susceptibilities of 760 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animal infections (400), human infections (300) and healthy human carriers (60) to seven antibiotics were determined by an agar dilution technique. The isolates from human infections were more resistant to a wider spectrum of antibiotics than were the strains from animal infections and healthy human carriers. Amikacin and gentamicin were the most active drugs against all groups of strains.
[Heteroimmune hemolytic anemia associated with antilymphocyte globulin treatment in a patient with aplastic anemia].
Medicina    January 1, 1990   Volume 50, Issue 4 361-364
Goldztein S, Carreras Vescio LA, Salamone HJ, Calahonra R, Kohan AI, Sánchez Avalos JC.A 24-year-old male patient with a severe aplastic anemia (SAA) was treated with equine-antilymphocyte globulin (ALG). As complication of this treatment he developed a severe heteroimmune hemolytic anemia mediated by anti-species pan-agglutinin antibodies present in ALG. In spite of the fact that ALG is absorbed with red-cell stroma and platelets to remove anti-erythrocyte and anti-platelet contaminating antibodies, often only partial absorption is achieved, and the remaining antibodies are passively acquired by the recipient. Neutropenia and especially thrombocytopenia are usual complications ...
Conformational comparison in the growth hormone family.
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1990   Volume 95, Issue 2 229-232 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(90)90070-a
Rivero JL, Cascone O, Biscoglio de Jimenez Bonino MJ.1. The method of Kubota et al. [Biochim. biophys. Acta 701, 242-252 (1982)] was applied to several members of the growth hormone family in order to examine their conformational homology. 2. The method neither detects differences between rat, cow, sheep, horse and alpaca hormones, nor between monkey and human hormones. 3. Lack of homology between primate and non-primate growth hormones was found in segments 42-49 and 184-191. The first fragment could be linked to species-specificity.
Effect of an aqueous extract of black walnut (Juglans nigra) on isolated equine digital vessels.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1990   Volume 51, Issue 1 83-88
Galey FD, Beasley VR, Schaeffer D, Davis LE.An aqueous extract was made from black walnut (Juglans nigra) heartwood obtained in the fall of the year. Ten hours after nasogastric administration of 5 L of the extract, a 550-kg, 13-yr-old Quarter Horse gelding experienced Obel grade-3 laminitis. The effect of aqueous extract of black walnut on vascular contractility was then tested, using isolated equine digital arteries and veins. The vessels were maintained in Krebs bicarbonate buffer with 95% oxygen at 37 C. The extract did not induce a direct contractile effect. It did, however, reversibly enhance the vasoconstriction induced in the is...

Histochemical and biochemical observations on milk-fat-globule membranes from several mammalian species.
Acta histochemica. Supplementband    January 1, 1990   Volume 40 59-64
Welsch U, Schumacher U, Buchheim W, Schinko I, Jenness P, Patton S.A specific secretory product of the lactating mammary gland are triglyceride fat globules which are enveloped by a very complex membrane, the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). In different mammalian species (man, rhesus monkey, horse, goat, sheep, cow, grey seal, camel, alpaka) the glycoproteins of this membrane have been analyzed by gel electrophoresis, Western blotting and lectin histochemistry. A remarkable intra- and interspecific variability of these glycoproteins has been detected pointing to so far unknown physiological adaptions, which may play a role in the intestine of the new born. ...

[The occurrence of feed-induced stomach ulcers in horses].
Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde    January 1, 1990   Volume 132, Issue 3 121-126
Coenen M.Ponies were fed hay (n = 21) or mixed feed (n = 27; 128 g crude protein, 175 g crude fibre/kg dry matter) for at least 14 days (treatment against parasites with ivermectin before the experimental period). The feeding level was 18 g dry mater/kg body weight/day. After the feeding period (the experiments were conducted to investigate the water and electrolyte content of the alimentary tract in dependence on feed, feeding time and physical exercise) the ponies were slaughtered and the stomachs were visually controlled for the occurrence of ulcers. In the hay group no gastric ulcers were observed,...

van der Velden MA, Stolk PW.Three horses with different and unusual types of inguinal herniation outside the vaginal cavity are described in detail. Attention is paid to the differences between these conditions and the more commonly occurring inguinal herniation inside the vaginal cavity.
The effect of high-intensity exercise on the respiratory capacity of skeletal muscle.
Pflugers Archiv : European journal of physiology    January 1, 1990   Volume 415, Issue 4 407-413 doi: 10.1007/BF00373617
Gollnick PD, Bertocci LA, Kelso TB, Witt EH, Hodgson DR.The effect of high-intensity exercise on the respiratory capacity of skeletal muscle was studied in horses which ran five 600-m bouts on a track with 2 min of rest between exercise bouts, or once to fatigue on a treadmill at an intensity that elicited the maximal oxygen uptake. Venous blood and biopsy samples of the middle gluteal muscle were collected at rest, after each exercise bout, and 30 and 60 min post-exercise. Blood samples were analyzed for lactate concentration and pH and muscle samples for metabolites, pH, and respiratory capacity. Venous blood and muscle pH declined to 6.91 +/- 0....
Leiomyosarcoma of the duodenum in two horses.
Journal of comparative pathology    January 1, 1990   Volume 102, Issue 1 119-123 doi: 10.1016/s0021-9975(08)80014-x
Mair TS, Taylor FG, Brown PJ.Two horses affected by chronic, intermittent colic were found, at post-mortem examination, to have localized annular thickening of a segment of the duodenum. Histological examination of the lesion in both cases revealed a tumour composed of bundles of oval or spindle-shaped cells that stained as muscle with van Gieson stain. The histological diagnosis was leiomyosarcoma. The tumour had caused partial bowel obstruction in both horses.
Rapid determination of methandrostenolone in equine urine by isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
Journal of chromatography    December 29, 1989   Volume 497 49-57 doi: 10.1016/0378-4347(89)80004-0
Edlund O, Bowers L, Henion J, Covey TR.Urine samples were spiked with [17-methyl-2H3]methandrostenolone as internal standard and extracted with a mixture of dichloromethane and cyclohexane. The organic phase was concentrated and injected onto a short octyl-silica column (30 mm x 4.6 mm I.D.) for separation of methandrostenolone and 17-epimethandrostenolone. The effluent from the column was connected to a Sciex TAGA 6000E triple quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with an atmospheric pressure ion source for sampling of ions generated by a heated pneumatic nebulizer with corona discharge ionization. This ion source produced abundan...

Primary structure of horse serotransferrin glycans. Demonstration that heterogeneity is related to the number of glycans and to the presence of N-acetylneuraminic acid and N-acetyl-4-O-acetylneuraminic acid.
European journal of biochemistry    December 22, 1989   Volume 186, Issue 3 583-590 doi: 10.1111/j.1432-1033.1989.tb15248.x
Coddeville B, Stratil A, Wieruszeski JM, Strecker G, Montreuil J, Spik G.Three serotransferrin variants Tf 2a, Tf 4b and Tf 5b were isolated in an homogeneous form from a preparation of homozygous horse serotransferrin Tf 0. On the basis of the results concerning molecular mass determination and the carbohydrate analysis, it is concluded that the serotransferrin variant Tf 2a contains only one glycan while variants Tf 4b and Tf 5b contain two glycans. The structure of all of the glycans has been established by combining methylation analysis, mass spectrometry and 400-MHz 1H-NMR spectroscopy. From the obtained results, it appears that the two glycans of Tf 5b varian...
Comparison of bacteriologic culture of blood and necropsy specimens for determining the cause of foal septicemia: 47 cases (1978-1987).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 12 1759-1763
Wilson WD, Madigan JE.Diagnosis of bacterial septicemia was confirmed by results of bacteriologic culture of antemortem blood samples and/or necropsy specimens obtained from 47 foals up to 8 days old. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from all 47 foals, and mixed infections with more than one organism were involved in 26 (55%). Escherichia coli, Actinobacillus spp, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most frequent isolates, infecting 55, 34, and 23% of foals, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria and anaerobic bacteria were isolated only from foals with mixed infections with gram-negative organisms. Clostridium pe...
