In vivo observations on the ciliate protozoa inhabiting the large intestine of the horse. The ciliate population of the large intestine of the horse shows large, daily variations. The ventral colon is the site where the ciliate fauna varies most. Two species, Cycloposthium edentatum and C. dentiferum, became established in the large intestine after passage through the stomach and small intestine. The introduction of new species into the ventral colon caused significant changes in the fauna of that part of the gut.
Levels of some chemical constituents in normal horse sera. THE chemical analyses reported in this paper arc the result of an investigation on the sera of thirty normal horses from a heavy draught horse stable in Glasgow. Determinations have been made of scrum proteins (albumin and total globulin), alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphate and urea. The 1952 outbreak of encephalitis in California; epidemiologic aspects. For the most part, epidemiologic phenomena observed in the outbreak of encephalitis in 1952 accorded with patterns that had been apparent in previous years. Ninety-seven per cent of the 414 laboratory-confirmed cases of western equine and St. Louis encephalitis in humans occurred in the 20 Central Valley counties. The cases of western equine encephalomyelitis in horses were generally scattered over the state.
