Topic:Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands in horses, playing a significant role in the regulation of metabolism, immune response, and stress management. As a glucocorticoid, cortisol influences various physiological processes, including glucose metabolism, inflammation modulation, and the maintenance of homeostasis during stress. Its levels in horses can vary due to factors such as exercise, environmental changes, and psychological stressors. Cortisol is often measured to assess stress responses and overall well-being in equine health management. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the production, regulation, and implications of cortisol in equine physiology and health.
Interday variation and effect of transportation on indirect blood pressure measurements, plasma endothelin-1 and serum cortisol in Standardbred and Icelandic horses.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    June 10, 2012   Volume 54, Issue 1 37 doi: 10.1186/1751-0147-54-37
Söder J, Bröjer JT, Nostell KE.Systemic hypertension is a prominent feature in humans with metabolic syndrome (MS) and this is partly caused by an enhanced endothelin-1 (ET-1) mediated vasoconstriction. There are indications that systemic hypertension might be a feature in equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) but if ET-1 is involved in the development of hypertension in horses is not known. Increased levels of cortisol have also been found in humans with MS but there are no reports of this in horses. Before blood pressure, plasma ET-1 and serum cortisol can be evaluated in horses with EMS, it is necessary to investigate the inte...
Impact of moderate exercise on ovarian blood flow and early embryonic outcomes in mares.
Journal of animal science    June 4, 2012   Volume 90, Issue 11 3770-3777 doi: 10.2527/jas.2011-4713
Smith RL, Vernon KL, Kelley DE, Gibbons JR, Mortensen CJ.The advent of embryo transfer has allowed horses to continue to train and compete during the breeding season. However, the associated stress of exercise may be detrimental to reproduction. The objectives of this study were to evaluate differing exercise protocols on reproductive blood flow and embryonic outcomes in mares. Light-horse mares were randomized into control (n = 4), partial-exercised (n = 6), and full-exercised (n = 6) groups. Partial-exercised mares were moderately exercised 30 min daily during the periovulatory period and rested after ovulation for 7 d. Full-exercised mares were e...
Circadian and circannual rhythms of cortisol, ACTH, and α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in healthy horses.
Domestic animal endocrinology    May 27, 2012   Volume 43, Issue 4 317-324 doi: 10.1016/j.domaniend.2012.05.005
Cordero M, Brorsen BW, McFarlane D.Cosinor analysis was used to evaluate whether pituitary and adrenal hormones exhibit circadian rhythmicity in horses. The effect of season and animal age on their respective rhythms was also determined. In addition, the usefulness of evaluating cortisol rhythmicity for the diagnosis of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) was assessed. Serum cortisol concentrations (P < 0.01), but not plasma ACTH or α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), showed a significant circadian periodicity in horses. An effect of season on hormone concentration was observed with plasma ACTH and α-MSH co...
Hair cortisol level as a retrospective marker of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in horse foals.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    May 23, 2012   Volume 194, Issue 1 131-132 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2012.04.006
Comin A, Veronesi MC, Montillo M, Faustini M, Valentini S, Cairoli F, Prandi A.Stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and elevated cortisol concentrations in fetal plasma are associated with foal maturity, viability and adaptation to independent life. However, non-invasive measurement of cortisol in hair samples has not yet been validated in horses. The current study developed a radioimmunoassay to analyse cortisol in horse hair and was used to measure cortisol hair concentration at birth and at 30 and 60 days of age as a retrospective study of HPA axis activity. Cortisol was detectable in the hair of foals from birth until 2 months, but decreased w...
Cortisol and progestin release, heart rate and heart rate variability in the pregnant and postpartum mare, fetus and newborn foal.
Theriogenology    May 22, 2012   Volume 78, Issue 4 759-767 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2012.03.023
Nagel C, Erber R, Bergmaier C, Wulf M, Aurich J, Möstl E, Aurich C.The mechanisms leading to parturition in the horse in many aspects differ from those in other species. Pregnancy is maintained not by progesterone but by 5α-pregnanes and the progestin precursor pregnenolone originates from the fetus. As parturition approaches, the fetal adrenal switches from pregnenolone to cortisol synthesis but it is not known whether cortisol crosses the placenta. We hypothesized that in parallel to fetal cortisol release, cortisol in the maternal circulation increases before foaling and this increase can be determined in both saliva and plasma. In addition, maternal, fet...

Physiology & behavior    March 1, 2012   Volume 106, Issue 4 428-438 doi: 10.1016/j.physbeh.2012.02.025
Henry S, Zanella AJ, Sankey C, Richard-Yris MA, Marko A, Hausberger M.The present study aims to investigate whether the presence of unrelated adult horses at weaning would reduce the social stress of weaning and the emergence of undesirable behaviours. We tested this hypothesis in 32 domestic foals by comparing short and medium term behavioural and physiological responses to weaning in foals maintained in homogeneous groups of peers (PW) to those of foals grouped with both peers and unrelated adults (AW). In total, three trials were conducted, which each trial consisting of one AW group and one PW group. In all foals, weaning was followed by increased vocalizati...
Gene expression of ACTH, glucocorticoid receptors, 11βHSD enzymes, LH-, FSH-, GH receptors and aromatase in equine epididymal and testicular tissue.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    February 15, 2012   Volume 47, Issue 6 928-935 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2012.01993.x
Herrera-Luna CV, Budik S, Aurich C.Glucocorticoids (GCs) are important mediators of the stress response and have been implicated in the function and regulation of testicular functions in different species. In many tissues, intracellular glucocorticoid activity is controlled by either or both of the two known isoforms of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11βHSD) type 1 and 2, which interconvert active and inactive GCs. Little is known about the effects of stress on fertility in the equine species. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the expression of receptors for GCs and adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACT...

Finno CJ, McKenzie E, Valberg SJ, Pagan J.Recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) occurs in fit, nervous Thoroughbreds fed high nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) diets. Clinical signs are diminished by feeding low NSC, high fat diets; however, the mechanism is unclear. Objective: To determine if the glucose, insulin and cortisol response to isocaloric diets varying in fat and NSC availability differ in fit vs. unfit Thoroughbreds with RER. Methods: Four fit (10 weeks treadmill training) RER Thoroughbred mares were exercised and fed 3 isocaloric (121 MJ/day) diets in a 5 day/diet block design. Two high NSC concentrates, sweet feed (SF...
Morphological, haemato-biochemical and endocrine changes in young Standardbreds with ‘maladaptation’ to early training.
Equine veterinary journal. Supplement    May 27, 2011   Issue 38 171-178 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2010.00273.x
Leleu C, Haentjens F.The demands in the Standardbred trotters industry require young, still growing horses, to be trained well above light exercise level. During that period, the risk of occurrence of energy imbalance and maladaptation to training is high. In man, the lack of energy homeostasis is considered as the basic problem in the development of chronic fatigue. Objective: To find objective biomarkers of early maladaptation to training in young racehorses under field conditions. Methods: Sixty-five 2-year-old Standardbreds were followed during their first 3 months of training in 5 different training centres. ...
Absence of a serum melatonin rhythm under acutely extended darkness in the horse.
Journal of circadian rhythms    May 10, 2011   Volume 9 3 doi: 10.1186/1740-3391-9-3
Murphy BA, Martin AM, Furney P, Elliott JA.In contrast to studies showing gradual adaptation of melatonin (MT) rhythms to an advanced photoperiod in humans and rodents, we previously demonstrated that equine MT rhythms complete a 6-h light/dark (LD) phase advance on the first post-shift day. This suggested the possibility that melatonin secretion in the horse may be more strongly light-driven as opposed to endogenously rhythmic and light entrained. The present study investigates whether equine melatonin is endogenously rhythmic in extended darkness (DD). Methods: Six healthy, young mares were maintained in a lightproof barn under an LD...
