Journal of equine veterinary science    October 10, 2026   doi: 10.1016/j.jevs.2026.105909
Background: Growth is a critical stage influencing the future athletic performance and economic value of Thoroughbreds. In pastoral systems, extrinsic factors may exert a particularly strong influence on development. Objectives: To analyze the influence of stud farm, birth month, and birth year on body weight of Thoroughbred foals raised in pastoral systems. Methods: A 10-year longitudinal study (2009-2018) included 2408 Thoroughbred foals (51% females, 49% males) from seven stud farms of Pampas region. Body weight was recorded from 5 to 19 months of age. The Brody model was used to estimate ind...
Nutritional composition, fatty acids profile and immunoglobulin G concentrations of mare milk of the Chilean Corralero horse breed.
   October 10, 2026
The objective of the present study was to characterize the nutritional composition, fatty acid profile, and IgG concentration of the milk produced by Chilean Corralero horse (CCH) mares from breeding farms located in southern Chile. Forty-five milk samples were collected from three of the biggest breeding farms (coded as A, B and C) specialized in breeding and selection of CCH in Chile (15 mares sampled per farm). Farms differed in days in milk (DIM). A negative association between DIM and ash, milk protein, milk solids, saturated fatty acids (SFA), and gross energy (GE) was found, whereas DIM...
Injury to the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle as a possible cause of lameness in four horses.
   October 10, 2026
Four horses were evaluated because of hind limb lameness. Two had a distinct gait abnormality at the walk characterized by lateral rotation of the point of the calcaneus and medial rotation of the toe during the stance phase. Nuclear scintigraphy revealed a focal area of intense radioisotope uptake in the caudodistal aspect of the femur in all 4 horses, and 3 of the horses had a corresponding proliferative reaction on the caudodistal cortex of the femur on radiographs. In all 4 horses, a diagnosis of injury to the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle was made. Three of the horses returned to ath...
